MARK Stein, dubbed the “Golden One” by Potters fans in the 1990s, will be guest of honour at today’s game between Stoke and West Ham.

Stein is guaranteed a hero’s welcome after coming to symbolise Stoke’s early successes under Lou Macari during his first and most productive spell at the club between September 1991 and October 1993.

His rags-to-riches story – he initially arrived on loan from Oxford reserves – his pulsating work-rate and his explosive finishing all combined to make him the darling of the old Victoria Ground.

Stoke’s very own pocket rocket was a goalscoring hero on the biggest stage and against the biggest opposition.

For it was Stein netting the only goal in the Autoglass Trophy final of 1992 against Stockport, and it was also Stein putting two goals past Peter Schmeichel in a first leg League Cup win over Manchester United.

“Just watched the video again. All you have to do is kick the ball in to that net at the end of the pitch. What's the problem, it's a doddle. The bloke was amazing and was only on about £500 a week and you could watch him for about 2 quid. Great stuff.”

“Be fair bcbg, I don't think I have ever seen anyone make scoring goals look so simple. I doubt we will ever see the likes of Steino again.”

“I just watched the video and it totally baffles me that now we are in what is called the best league in the world we haven't got a single player in the squad 1% of the ability of Steino.Watching that sent shivers up my spine it was fantastic , much unlike the dross Pulis dishes out week in week out now that we are the Super power that is Syoke City !!!”

“Stoke should also have got Bertie down for the game, seeing the 2 of them together would really have stirred the memories. Football was more fun in those days. I still think that most of Lou's sides were functional just like the one we have now but Lou had the habit of finding that touch of genius like these two, Sherron and Sturridge etc.”
