Stoke City: Whelan in World Cup blow
STOKE midfielder Glenn Whelan looks set to miss out on Ireland's World Cup qualifier in Sweden tonight.
Whelan was originally named in the starting 11, but is still struggling with the ankle he injured in the first half of last week's goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion.
Question marks now hover over his availability for Ireland's home qualifier against Austria next Tuesday and Stoke's trip to Everton next Saturday.
Whelan, the most capped player ever while at Stoke, has been one of Giovanni Trapattoni's midfield mainstays as the Irish seek qualifcation from group C.

They go into this evening's game lying third, one point behind Sweden and four behind Germany, but with a game in hand on the Germans.
Marc Wilson is set to start for the Irish in Sweden tonight, while Stoke colleague Jon Walters is likely to be among the substitutes.

“Myvince
Have to dissagree with you on the Wheelan front mate,While i believe Wheelan is not the best of players, he did have some really good games this season.Ok he has had some bad ones also, but in my mind the good have outwieghed the bad.and Wheelan is a totally commited lad, plus Eire do not have a great lot of choice, and i would prefer him on the pitch, otherwise they might put Pulis,s love child on .God forbid.”

“'If Whelan is unavailable you need Whitehead to do the destructive work'
Just about sums up those two Stoke players, well said WinterVice.
A concept I do understand is that only an idiot would pick Whelan to play
every game for Stoke City.”

“No, no, and no. Charlie and Glenn aren't doubles. If Whelan is unavailable you need Whitehead to do the destructive work, Adam is never going to do that. Whelan is one of Trap's most trusted players, why would he drop Glenn because of injury. That would be totally out of character by the Italian who's a trrue gentleman, a concept you would never understand, myvice. Apart from injuries, Glenn has been ever present for Stoke, so why would this signal the end for him? Only an idiot would consider this likely.”

“'Trapattoni's original team selection on Thursday did not include McCarthy but the Wigan playmaker went on to produce a man-of-the-match display after replacing injured Glenn Whelan before the start' - report from the BBC
Could this be the end of Whelan's International career ?
Could this be his last Season to play for Stoke ?”

“Hope you get yourself fit soon Glenn. Possible chance for Charlie at Goodison?”
