Stoke City: Stoke launch appeal over Huth's red card
STOKE City chairman Peter Coates believes the outcome of Robert Huth's red-card appeal could be something of a test case for the English game.
The wider world will await the Football Association's decision later this week with interest after the red card was criticised by fans and pundits alike.
-

And the appeal decision could provide a future pointer amid the on-going confusion over what is now deemed a red or yellow-card offence.
Huth faces a three-match ban after being dismissed in the 44th minute of Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Sunderland following his challenge on midfielder David Meyler.
The club will use TV footage and photographic evidence to back their argument that referee Martin Atkinson was wrong to dismiss Huth.
Manager Tony Pulis was so incensed by the decision that he emailed a picture of the incident to Match of the Day on Saturday evening to highlight Stoke's case that Huth has been unfairly treated.
If unsuccessful, the defender would miss the games against Fulham, Crawley Town and Swansea City.
"I am 100 per cent behind the decision to appeal," said Coates, pictured right, "and I was on the case myself on the Sunday.
"As soon as I'd seen it on the telly, I thought we've got to look at this seriously because we are getting a real injustice here. That's how it seemed to me.
"Referees do get it wrong and I certainly thought it was a very poor decision.
"We paid a high price because I thought we'd go on to win that game. With the wind behind us and the snow in their faces, we could have over-powered them in the second half."
Pulis added: "We have studied all the evidence again and are convinced there was no intent. Robert was actually trying to pull out of the challenge."
Huth has only been sent off once before in 239 club appearances after picking up a second yellow card for Chelsea in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in 2004.
After Saturday's game, Pulis pointed an accusing finger at players in general for trying to con referees.
He also accused Meyler, who has suffered two cruciate knee ligament injuries in the past, of making a meal of the challenge to get Huth into trouble.
But Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has since leapt to the young midfielder's defence.
"Tony's point about players in general has got merit," said O'Neill, "but David Meyler is absolutely and utterly not one of them.
"This young lad has had an injury-stricken career and was naturally doing his utmost to avoid the challenge – he was still caught, though."

“Danny needed games. Wilson isn't playing bad at left-back so it'd be a risk (especially when we're not on top form!) to bring Higginbotham into the team now. He'll be back next year or we'll sign another left back. I'd wager that with anyone who disagrees. As for Upson, I can't imagine the transfer would be sanctioned anyway as we can't buy a player to replace him, but even if we allowed him the transfer, who says he'd want to move to China? Maybe it's just a Stokie thing but you could offer me all the money in the world and I wouldn't move there, not because there's anything wrong with China specifically but it's a different culture and language to engage with, the only reason I think Anelka will cope is that he's a journeyman!
And as for the Woodgate comments, I was saying this recently to a fellow football fan (not a Stoke one I'm afraid) and he was as surprised as all of us when Woodgate played at right-back but while talking about a thought came to me. Surely for a player who has been struggling for fitness, the best place to test him is at full-back - not to train him to play in that position, but to see if he can cope with more energetic duties. I know some of you disagree with me but I believe he improved as he played more at right-back. I'd be more confident with him in the centre of the defence than I was when we first signed him, that's for sure; mainly because I know his knees (or wherever his long term injury affected him) won't be having any effect on him now. And surely no one can deny that Woodgate can play the ball out of defence better than Huth? We need that at the moment considering we're lacking a player who can regain and help us keep possession. I said it before Huth's ban that I wanted him to have a break and either Woodgate or Upson to have a run alongside Shawcross. Looks like I'm going to get to see if it works or not!”

“Flinty-totally agree with your comment.I am deaf in one ear and could lip read what Terry said. My point was that Liverpool still seem to be wronged by the decision on Suarez despite the player serving his ban. Terry's punishment is yet to come, but he has not yet been found guilty of the offence so why should the FA strip him of the England captaincy? The law of the land is 'innocent until proven guilty' whereas the FA seem to be judge and jury without trial? If found guilty he must surely serve a similar ban?
Going into the Euros, can JT and RF play alongside each other? I think not, but it is Capello's call ahead of any trial , not the FA's. That's what we pay him £6m a year for?”

“Yes - he also let Danny Higginbotham go too -who was a pretty good Center-half at times lasyt year - - and if Upson goes then yes we are stuck with Woodgate - who also looks like he could get injured anytime based on his poor timing of a tackle. Big decisions for Pulis to make now - lets see what he is made of ?”

“In all fairness though Speil, the Terry incident was on television for all to see. You don't need to be a lip-reading expert to tell what he said. His only defence is that it was a heat of the moment remark. In both that and the Suarez case, both Chelsea and Liverpool cannot seem to distinguish between the difference between making a racist remark and being a racist. I could call someone of a different race something racist but it wouldn't necessarily mean I am racist just because I have said it. Why both Suarez and Terry couldn't say "Okay, I said something in the heat of the moment, I apologise for the offensive remark but I am not a racist etc etc" instead of both of them blatantly denying their cases when the evidence against them both is stronger than the evidence to support them!
(Watching SSN a lot, all you listen to recently is about these two! Huth's suspension and Upson's possible move to China are both sideshows!)”

“Mel-you make a good point there; but there are clear inconsistencies in the game today and the FA seem to get them consistently wrong for some reason? I am not referring to this decision in isolation but successive decisions in general.
For the good of the game, players, officials and the FA need to look at the malaise that is creeping into English football. I don't have much time for Capello and I'm not a big John Terry fan but how can the FA take away the captaincy from a player who has yet to be found guilty of any offence? A knee jerk reaction intended to appease the purists perhaps but harming the game nonetheless.
How can king Kenny keep harping on about Suarez's innocence when he has been found guilty of racial abuse? It's acceptable in his country by all accounts but he is now playing in our country and needs to abide by our laws. He's happy to accept the salaries the Prem is paying afterall. Does Liverpool FC have a code of conduct for employees? If the car park attendant had racially abused someone then surely he would have been sacked?
Don't get me wrong and if JT is indeed eventually found guilty of racism then treat him in the same way. That's all we ask, consistency.”

“FA have thrown out the appeal over Huth's red card. If that is not a political decision then it is incredulous.
Also what would be the point of introducing technology if the FA just take no notice of clear video technology showing Huth trying to pull out of the tackle?
I think if Stoke's hierachy had been a little less vociferous about this being a "test case for the English game" there might have been a better reaction from the FA.”
