MATCH RATING

Entertainment 7

BEGOVIC: Will be furious with himself for goal, but a couple of subsequent saves and the final score changed mood 6

SHOTTON: Not as much chance to shine offensively as Saturday, but fair play for energy and effort that helped bring home the spoils 7

CAMERON: Pretty nondescript for the most part and lucky to get away with late error 6

SHAWCROSS: Forceful presence when needed and on hand to support his full-backs in wider areas 7

HUTH: Didn't pale by comparison, but did miss a rare header second half and escaped a handball shout in his area 7

WALTERS: Really came to life late on with fine goal and part in the winner 7

WHELAN: His team's most effective player first half and recovered well from early second-half mistake 7

NZONZI: Hardly put a foot wrong and showed tremendous energy when the chips were down 7

ADAM: Try as he might, just wasn't going to be his night before early withdrawal 6

ETHERINGTON: Plenty of energy at times, but will be disappointed to miss Adam with first-half chance 6

CROUCH: Just not his night. Couldn't get his touch or passing going, then gets an arm in the mush from Coloccini 6

SUBSTITUTES

JONES (for Crouch, 40): A latent threat in the air and missed with one header before teeing up the winner 7

KIGHTLY (for Adam, 68): Not everything came off, in truth, but helped pep up the team when it was needed 6

JEROME (for Etherington, 68): Rose to the occasion mark a rare appearance with an even rarer goal 8

Not used: Sorensen, Palacios, Whitehead, Upson.

NEWCASTLE: Krul, Simpson, Santon, Williamson, Coloccini, Perch, Tiote, Anita (Sa Ameobi, 87), Gutierrez, Cisse (Ranger, 87), Ba. Subs not used: Elliott, Bigirimana, Marveuax, Ferguson, Tavernier.
