Stoke City: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard uses Potters to criticise Everton's style of play
LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard has caused controversy, both on Merseyside and in North Staffordshire, after he used Stoke City as an example to criticise Everton’s style of play.
The midfielder claimed his side were the only ones to ‘play football’ in the 2-2 derby draw at Goodison Park on Sunday, and criticised the Toffees for what he saw as long ball tactics.

Steven Gerrard talks to the referee during the game against Everton on Sunday.
“I thought we were fantastic and stood up to a team that are very similar to Stoke,” said Gerrard.
“Every single time they get the ball to the goalkeeper it comes in long.

“There was only one team who came to play football and that was us.”
It comes only a week after Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s jibe about the Potters being the ‘jolly green giants’ of the Premier League.
Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has already hit back at those who still generalise about his side’s style of play.
“It makes no difference to me, it’s ‘sticks and stones’,” he said last week.
“Everybody’s got their opinion and there’s enough vehicles to get them across these days.
“It takes time to evolve and to do that you need better players technically who will also work as hard as the rest.
“I think everybody is pleased with how we’ve played this year. I think we have played some good stuff this year, but I also think we played some good stuff last year.
“We are evolving, but you also need results. It’s getting the balance.”

“Lets be fair, Gerrard is correct the two teams play a very similar style, the only difference is that Everton have decent players and can score goals. The truth hurts”

“errrmm, isnt sullivan his name ?. Once again, there are some who will use any excuse, any reason, any matter to deflect from the real subject when they have no answers ! just like jjohnson, who stammers when they type? he just prefers to call people names and can't even spell his last name properly like he couldn't even spell boothen properly. Why, because they have nothing intelligent to say so they call people names.
Pesonally I don't mind one bit being compared to Everton. Very similar in status to us quality wise, but they have had a good start to the season, 16 points, sitting 5th, positive thinking manager. I have no clue if they will finish that way, since now I subscribe to sullivan's theory that what happened in the past has no bearing on what will happen in the future.”
