Stoke City: Lawrence hoping for promotion to Premier League wage packet
by Michael Baggaley
STOKE midfielder Liam Lawrence is expecting a formal contract offer from the club in the next 24 hours ... and hopes to resolve his future within a week.
-

The 27-year-old is under contract for another 12 months, but has asked for a pay rise and a deal to tie him to Stoke for the next four years.
Lawrence signed his last contract in March 2008 during the club's promotion season from the Championship. He has asked for a deal to reflect Stoke's Premier League status, but says he doesn't want to be the best paid player at the club.
He said: "I have read stuff about me wanting to be on £30,000 a week. That's just not true. I can't expect to go from less than £10,000 and ask for a 200 per cent increase."

“Seen him play against Bristol, and also watched the games in Canada on TV, in my humble opinion, there are a few players, the above included, that are not quite good enough to keep Stoke up and running in the Prem...so paying em prem wages, will that make them play any better? don't think so”

“It's not the comparison to the average person's wage that amazes me, it is the obsession that football club director's have to buy success at any price. Nearly all directors / chairman are successful business men in their own right, so why do they take crazy risks and put their clubs on the point of administration by paying over-inflated salaries for football's prima donnas. Most football clubs would now be bankrupt if they were a private sector business. Everytime a player like Kaka or Ronaldo moves for obscene sums of money, the Lawrences of this world want to jump on the bandwagon. Get real Mr Chairmen, the world is in recession or are footballers "out of this world".”

“Martin
Id be shocked if our players didnt have a relegation release/ wage reduction clause. St Peter is far to savvy to get caught out by that.
As you say though, the market dictates the wages people get in any walk of life. Football has gone off the scale and is due a reality check although until that happens, players will want parity with others in the same job - regardless what the rest of us earn.. thats just life.”

“None of them are worth it.. it's simply supply and demand - if Chairmen will pay it - they will ask for it - simple as.!
get a wage cap - £10k a week then you wouldn't see teams going bust all the time like Leeds - southampton and so on. I bet there's nothing in his contract to reduce the salary if Stoke are relegated - then they will end up like Newcastle and have to pay 2 players £750 000 for a month if no-one has signed them out of contract.!!!!!! abismal business.”

“Hi John, crewe. you wont find cresswell doin much at all im afraid, in my opinion cresswell is very happy sitting on the bench until the 85th minute then coming on the pitch running round like a headless chicken then showered changed and home! thank you very much. apprciate that you may feel cresswell is better than lawrence but to be honest they both are not good enough for the prem and both should leave.”

“The word. Why does it surprise you as Cresswell is twice the player Lawrence is and why therefore do we need another pacey winger. You won't find Cresswell falling over his dog!!!”

“firstly i think liam is telling white lies regarding his current salary. **
Liam is a very average player in the prem and i feel that we should sell him rather than offer any more money. he cant beat players on the wing, and only rarely puts in decent crosses. i think the money would be better spent on getting a pacey winger who can put the ball in the box and threaten a defence, which i think liam cant.
Part of this comment - where it says ** has been deleted as it contained details which could not be verified. Moderator.”
