Stoke City: High noon cup clash a low blow for Potters, claims Pulis

TONY Pulis has accused some in the English game of potentially damaging Stoke City's Europa League prospects by forcing them into a noon kick-off in the FA Cup.

Stoke's fifth-round tie at Crawley takes place at midday on Sunday, February 19 to accommodate live TV coverage on ESPN.

The match is sandwiched between Europa League ties against Valencia on the Thursday before and the Thursday after.

"Those are three massive games, but the authorities haven't helped us," said Pulis.

"They could have given us an afternoon slot instead of one so early in the day. They have a club in Europe, but have given us no thought.

"I believe they even wanted us to play on the Monday at one point, even though we have to play in Valencia on the Thursday."

ESPN requested the early kick-off so they could squeeze in a third televised game because they have Liverpool v Brighton at 4.30pm – the slot Pulis would have preferred – and ITV have Stevenage v Tottenham at 2pm.

Pulis fears the scheduling has tilted the cup tie towards Crawley due to the travelling and early preparation being forced on his players.

He continued: "To play against one of the top sides in Europe on the Thursday, then to ask us to play on a Sunday morning in what will be Crawley's cup final, I think we are getting the short end of it.

"Not only is there no consideration for us as a team representing our country, there's also no consideration for our supporters."

The FA declined to comment, while a spokesman for ESPN said: "Fixture schedules are a complex and detailed process that involves many parties, including the clubs, police, local authorities, broadcasters, the FA, Premier League and others."

    “Not bothered about all the personal abuse that has unfortunately ruined this site. But my observation on this would be;
    - the way the media works is that journalists ask many questions of managers at the mandatory press briefings that clubs have to give as part of their contractual obligations to the Premiership
    - managers answer the questions, and the journalists then write articles based on the most newsworthy or potentially provocative things the managers say. Their headlines and lead stories are not necessarily the lead comments of the managers. So in this case TP was probably asked for his views on the KO time and he commented as he did. Although personally i would like to have seen him say "We're Stoke and we just get on with it"
    - TP has no right to blame the KO time for Crawley as something which affects the squad's travel plans as they would stay in Sussex on the Sat night whatever the KO time
    - but I do think that he is concerned that Stoke fans will not be there in numbers, given the need for coaches etc to leave at 0630. Fortunately we have been given 25% or a bit more of the ground and I reckon we will indeed sell out our allocation.
    - and I will be there, as for most games ( although it's only half an hour drive for me so I can have a lie-in!). See you in Valencia!”

    “Your opinion is of no consequence Soccerknob. You don't like me because I've sussed you for the lying SOB Man Utd fan you really are. If you had all this playing and coaching behind you then you would never have resisted the temptation to mention it before. Why had you never heard of John Barnes ? Why could you not remember where Stoke's FA Cup semi's were played ? Don't give me the "I was only 12 years old" drivel cus I was 12 when I went to Wembley and I remember it like it was yesterday. Liar, Liar Liar. Bet you were chuffed when Paul Scholes came back.”

    “I see the multiple user names has reared again. Another personality used by the same person? How could one individual defend another like DJ does Johnson. No, I don't buy it and that expletive by DJ should be reported. Face it, the Pulis brand is the worst football ever seen at Stoke City.”
