ANDY Wilkinson will have a scan tomorrow after suffering a problem at the back of his left knee during the opening minutes at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old full-back was able to play on until the 51st minute, when he was substituted.

He is anxiously awaiting the diagnosis, although the international break gives him a fortnight before City's next game, at home to Aston Villa.

But Wilkinson was still frustrated to have picked up the knock, having been given his first league start of the campaign when he was used on the right of midfield.

He said: "I was playing there because we were trying to hold Ashley Cole's runs down that flank.

"I felt the problem near the start, so it was a case of trying to get through it. Now I'll have to wait to see what the physio says."

At least Wilkinson was able to play his part in keeping Stoke in the game before he was forced off. Only Florent Malouda's 32nd-minute strike separated the teams at that stage.

He added: "It's always difficult and frustrating here because Chelsea have such good players, but the lads worked really hard.

"Glenn Whelan's shot deserved better and, had that gone in, it would have changed the game.

"It was one of those things, but hopefully we'll win the next one.

"I really enjoyed playing against Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup last week and I was looking forward to this game.

"Now I'll concentrate on getting myself fit and getting my place back in the team."
