STOKE City new-boy Matthew Etherington thanked Potters fans for his Britannia Stadium welcome – but admitted winning the man-of-the-match award was a sentimental vote.

Fans, using their mobile phones, picked the midfielder as their star man on his first start for the club.

"Maybe it was a sympathy vote because it was my first game," he modestly suggested afterwards. "I thought I did well in the first half, but I didn't see so much of the ball in the second."

“Agreed re: Wilko - I just think he's too inexperienced and hot headed.. I bet you thought he'd bring down Babbel in the box rather than just outside near the end of the game? Exactly. Great blood and thunder player but not the cleverest against the "gamesmanship" of the Premier.”

“st i absolutely agree with you but except for one thing, dont you think wilkinson has been fabulous in the past 2 games against united and liverpool, rory has got to stay in the team because of his throw ins, saturday the whole team was brilliant, but now we have etherington do you think we need to play lawrence? i though amdy faye mom, did anyone think cresswell played well aswell, seems to play betetr against the biggr teams i.e united and liverpool. promisiong saturday boys keep it up snatch a draw against chelsea come on.”

“Abdoulaye and Shawcross deserve a lot of praise although I thought the MOM was Amdy Faye.
He was absolutely awsome and didnt give Gerrard any time on the ball at all. Great effort and looked
a decent battling partnership with Whelan. Lawrence and Etherington will cause all sorts of problems if
played in the same team.. I would move Rory to right back to accomodate two exciting wide players and
drop Griff to the bench. Abdoulaye seems twice the leader Griff is anyway so everyones a winner.”

“Mark. Didn't see the Blackburn match other than very brief highlights so take your word for it. Agree with New Yorker that Ab Faye is our best player. Not sure what TP is going to do with fringe players. With Fuller, Mama, Liam and Etherington coming into the frame its hard to see how Soares, Tongue, Pugh, Pericard, will get a game.”

“The man of the match and so far Man of the Season by a country mile was and is Abdoulaye Faye. He was immense and Shawcross into one of the bargains of the Century. Ab Faye is the Captain and the Rock of this Team and how Pulis can ever leave him out of the side - unless both his legs are broken - is beyond me. The two key games he did - Derby and Hartlepool - we lost. Please TP never leave him out again - our defence will thrive and so will the rest of the team. If Beattie arrives this week and a quality midfield player then we should be set for a good second half. I fancy us getting something from an ailing Chelsea - Kitson to open his account .....Etherington supplies.”
