Stoke City: Etherington determined to hit top gear
MATTHEW Etherington is ready to give the final third of the season a real crack after confessing to an indifferent campaign.
And he warned Stoke against thinking their Premier League survival is already guaranteed because of the 10-point buffer to the relegation zone.

Etherington says he and his colleagues have everything to play for over the next month to ensure progress in the Europa League and FA Cup... and to prevent a relegation fight in the league.
"My form's been indifferent, to be honest, definitely, for one reason or another," he said.
"I suppose you get this as a winger. There's been some good games, but I also know myself there's been some bad ones.
"I want to kick on to the end of the season and I'd like to think I can improve when it matters."
He firmly denied he has lost any appetite since being resigned to the fact he won't play for England.
"The England thing has probably gone now," added the 30-year-old winger.
"I'm gutted to have never played for England, because I've been there or thereabouts.
"I feel I was good enough and I've had millions of people tell me that."
Etherington, who has now shaken off the virus which forced him to miss Saturday's defeat by Sunderland, remains confident the Stoke dressing-room won't fall into the trap of thinking they are already safe.
"The gap is slowly getting smaller and it's time to start picking up some points," he said. You can never be complacent about these things, but I know we do have a good enough squad.
"There are a couple of games coming up that are winnable (Fulham and Swansea) and we've got to start picking up points."

“Rare you throw insults at me or include me in one, lately anyway!
I use the saying "Do you think Pulis..." because your comments always imply that that is what he does, hence why it keeps cropping up!
I believe the manager and the players are responsible for wins and losses. Notice that, players AND manager.
So ignore the Woodgate problem, you believe that Shotton shows no attacking intent in any game he has played on right-wing and that he is just filling a hole? Because if you do then I'll argue Shotton's case that considering he is a defender by nature he has fulfilled his attacking duties to the best of his ability. Also, if as you suggest Etherington is getting closed down by 3 or 4 players, which I don't believe is the case, surely it is then Matty's job to exploit the space that those marking him have left open? TP can't go shouting to him in such a case "you're open!", that's the job of the players around him to give him a call, or for Matty himself to lift his head up and see if he can make a cross-field pass and spread the play.
And sorry if I typed too fast but I expect you will keep up(!) Requesting again that you do not include me in any of your 'picking on soccerfoot' groups. I only make derisory comments if they are made in my direction, otherwise as I've said as recent as this week all I'll comment on is the football, Stoke (naturally) or anything else concerning the sport.”

“flint, you sure like that saying dont you. "do you think that Pulis just tells the players to play poorly" Ok here goes, and ill type slower so you and jayenne understand. Lets say when Pulis uses Shotton and Woodgate on the right, the opposition beams with delight because they know their only threat on the wings is Etherington. So, they send 2,3 sometimes 4 defenders onto Etherington basically shutting him down, leaving him no room to do anything but pass it back or try and kick the ball against the opposition's legs to get a corner or throw in ! perfect example of that was against Wes tBrom, but any time that Pennant wasnt on the right wing to add attacking balance from both wings, Etherington suffered ! Please look at facts of lack of goals and lack of opportunities to score goals by this. As we are one of a few teams who use out and out wingers to attack, the opposition knows this, looks at the line up, sees who is on the right, if its not Pennant they say ok. lets take care of Etherington. But you take into consideration that he has also been below par form wise , but used anyway due to lack of anyone else to use there, he has suffered because of that too !
For people who just praise Pulis as a god, you people dont give him much credit for actually managing the team do you ? Flint, do you believe like johnson does (and has actually said so)that all Pulis really does is fill out the squad sheet and just lets the players play how they want to ??
and you folks say i dont know anything about football !”

“JTFLINT - dont bamboozle Soccertit with anything but the most basic facts about formation etc as it really confuses him. I dont think they give that much of a breakdown for him to repeat on here on ESPN. He likes to stick to the basics; or annoy people. Don't take him out of his comfort zone or he will accuse you of bullying and being part of some imaginary group that's out to get him and his righteous bortherhood lol”

“How can you argue that sf? Are you saying that Pulis has just suddenly told Matty to play differently to how he has the past three seasons? Yes when it has just been him (not him and Pennant playing) he has had a lot of work to do, but he hasn't been his mercurial best all season bar the Spurs game in my honest opinion. He's had injuries and look at any player who has a recurring injury, it's hard to maintain a high level of form when constantly in and out of the team. We play a 4-2-4 system so when Shotton plays as one of the four attacking players of course Matty is going to have more work to do, but considering how good a player he is and how good he can be, he should be able to handle the pressure. He handled it well enough in 2009/10 season when Delap played on the right of midfield for most of the season instead of Lawrence.”

“Ill be #1000001 and tell you that if Redknapp gets the nod, your england days may not be over yet. He likes players with a spurs and hammers background and he does not dislike stoke.”

“Ive asked you before Latthink - do you shirt buttons up for the sake of humanity!
You shouldnt be using this site to attempt to groom us vulnerable Stoke City supporters lol
As for above - good luck Matty. In fairness the whole team seems to not be firing on all cylinders perhaps a combination of the novelty of being in the Prem wearing off a little now we are established as well as fatigue from so many games. Could be a whole number of things”

“The last few league games were winnable too, but unfortunately we didn't win any of them.”
