Stoke City: Diao set to sign new deal
by Michael Baggaley
SENEGAL midfielder Salif Diao is poised to sign a new one-year deal with Stoke City.
-

Diao appeared to be on his way out of the Britannia Stadium at the end of last season after revealing he wasn't happy with the club's initial contract offer.
But the 32-year-old looks likely to commit his future to the club next week following talks yesterday.
Diao's representative Gary Mellor, of Hanley-based agents Beswicks, said the midfielder was ready to turn down other clubs to play for Tony Pulis.
He said: "I have had long discussions with Tony Scholes, Tony Pulis and Salif, and we are 99 per cent there."

“I really hoped that this season would be different from the events we have seen under the Pulis years. The new campaign is just around the corner, other teams are improving their squads and we are re-signing Salif Diao. We have performed above and beyond over the course of the last few years, but we cannot always expect that blood and guts, arrrd work are going to be enough. We have to improve and become a Premiership squad.
Everybody knows that the second season is the hardest, the impact / surprise factor is gone and teams will come to understand our tactics. This started to happen at the end of last season, and will only get worse, we have no plan B with the players we currently have available. If you look at our squad, it is thread bare, with very little premiership quality. We have so many Championship players that need to be removed from the club as soon as possible, such as:
S Simonson, A Griffin, L Cort, D Pugh, A Davies, I Sonko, S Olofinjana, T Soares, S Diao, Amdy Faye, M Tongue, R Cresswell, M Sidebe, D Kitson.
That doesn't leave us with a lot left for a Premiership campaign, when this is the time that we should be much stronger than the lkes of Burnley, Wolves etc¿based on a year in the top flight and more money to spend.. We have a very young right-back, a centre half playing left-back, no cover in the centre of defense. Two wingers with no competition, both likely to receive suspensions, or have "dog" related injuries. The midfield has no pace or creativity, and we simply have nobody who is a box-to-box kind of player. Delap's throws are not going to save us next year and we need to be improving soon, to start and alow the players to gel, ready for August. Up front, we have the inconsistent, petulant Fuller, luckily Beattie (great player), but we are crying out for a couple more different types of striker to complement and put those guys under pressure. We need impact players.
I¿m overjoyed that we are in the Prem again for another year, and it¿s great to hear Pulis and Coates talking of pushing on, and bringing the quality we need. But once again, it¿s starting to feel like we are missing out on players, and will end up panic buying like the last few years. We need to sell the club better than we are and start to bring in realistic players who will improve us, not to mention removing the dead wood as soon as possible.
Come on Tone, we are crying out for some good news, soon!”
