Stoke City: Contract boost for duo
STOKE have agreed new contracts with the old and the new after shaking hands on deals with veteran goalkeeper Steve Simonsen and teenage striker Louis Moult.
Simonsen, who has just joined Sheffield United on loan in time for today's game at Doncaster, has agreed a new one-year contract until the summer of 2011.
And Moult, the 17-year-old Academy graduate who recently made his league debut, has signed a two-year professional contract as reward for his rapid progress.
Simonsen's new deal will extend his Stoke links into a seventh year.
The move by Stoke quickly ends speculation over his immediate future.
Simonsen, aged 30, is now third in the pecking order after January's signing of Portsmouth keeper Asmir Begovic to go alongside Denmark international and current number one Thomas Sorensen.
Manager Tony Pulis said the re-signing of Simonsen was part of a plan for the Britannia side.
He said: "We have wanted to have three senior goalkeepers on the books for some time and obviously we know all about Steve's qualities.
"Steve has done well whenever called upon, often at short notice, and I'm more than happy to have a player of his experience and ability hanging around the place.
"With three keepers to hand, we will have the option to send one out next season, but with an instant recall option just in case.
"We've taken chances at times with just two goalkeepers this season and you can't keep doing that and getting away with it."
Moult has consistently caught the eye of respected judges during his progress through Stoke's Academy from an early age.
But that progress has enjoyed a steep upward curve over the past 18 months.
His improvement has persuaded the club into securing his services on a longer contract.
The new deal comes barely a week after the talented striker stepped onto the pitch for his first taste of Premier League action in the latter stages of the 1-1 draw at Burnley.
His first day with his new contract began with his manager teasingly cutting him down to size after accusing him of ignoring Matthew Etherington as they passed each other in the training ground compound.
"He's big-time already Matty," Pulis bellowed.
"He's already custard-pied the best player in the club now he's got his new contract."
The startled youngster was out of earshot by the time Pulis added: "His attitude has been absolutely fantastic and I've been really pleased with his progress.
"I was delighted to see one of the kids playing Premier League football because that's the way we want to go.
"It was also a pat on the back for everyone in the Academy.
"News of his debut will hopefully help them in respect of attracting new players."
Moult was born in nearby Penkhull and chief executive Tony Scholes added this would endear him to the home support.
He said: "The fact that he was born just one mile away from the stadium and has progressed all the way through the ranks here at the club is also very pleasing.
"I am sure the supporters will take Louis in as one of their own."
