FEES for pest control services are set to rise as a council attempts to balance its books in the wake of Government spending cuts.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is increasing charges to get rid of mice, bed bugs and wasps from £50 to £51.50.

The authority is maintaining its £10 charge to get rid of rats.

The fees have been criticised by opposition councillors, who fear residents could put themselves at risk attempting to tackle infestations.

Councillor Henry Jebb told fellow councillors at a scrutiny panel: "It used to be free to get rid of rats and mice.

"There are many communities in the district where rats are a communal problem and where you cannot identify which property is responsible.

"We should encourage people to report rats. There was a problem in Brown Edge and no-one wanted to pay the £10 fee. It is absolutely essential to encourage people to report rats."

Councillor Ron Locker said: "Why are we charging more than £50 for a wasp infestation?

"That is a lot of money for many elderly people, who may be tempted into having a go at getting rid of nests themselves.

"There is always a danger with wasps. If people get stung it can be fatal."

The proposed fees were due to be discussed at today's meeting of the Moorlands District Council's ruling cabinet.
