Staffordshire walk: Dunwood
A hilly walk among fields and quiet roads.
The journey:
From the car walk south along the road, passing a campsite on the left. At Bradshaw Park, on the right, take footpath down the drive, to enter the right side of the lawns.
Continue to a stile and along the right side of a field to another stile. Bear slightly left climbing the field to reach a stile and over.
Continue over the summit of the hill and locate a cinder path which leads down and left to a house. Follow through to house then along drive to reach a road where turn left. Follow road to reach Dunwood. Continue past the first dwellings to reach a farm drive on right. Signpost sign. Follow the drive down to the farm then the waymarks round the right end of the barn to reach a strange stile. Over and down the hill. At the stile, follow the right edge of the field to reach a lane. Turn left and when it bears sharp left, take the footpath on the right, aiming for the pylon in the field ahead. Pass it on your right to reach a stile in the hedge and over.
Follow down the field to a footbridge then climb the other side, aiming for the rightmost of two gates. At the gate, see a bridge over the stream on the left. Over and then right, to follow the stream on the right to reach a farm and then road. Turn right.
Just before the first building on the right, locate a footpath sign on the bank on the left. Climb steps to a stile, over and cross the field ahead to a stile. Continue across the next field to locate a stile in the hedge opposite, then over and aim for the top right corner of the field. Continue up the drive to a farm, then follow the drive right, past the buildings, to reach a road. Continue ahead (right) to soon reach a surfaced bridleway on the left and a sharp bend to the right with a lane ahead. Take this lane to reach Damslane Farm. At the sharp left corner locate a footpath sign on the left, pointing right, to go into the farm garden on the right. Through the gate then across left to a stone stile in the corner and a wooden gate behind. Through these then keep to the left of the field to locate a stile in the hedge on the left. Over then half right to a pair of stiles in the hedge at the bottom of the small field. Over then left to a stile in the next hedge. Over then half right, towards the house to reach a gate and stile. Over and turn left on the road. At the next road junction, turn right and where the road bends sharp right at Close Gate Farm, continue into the farm. At the far end is a small gate and a larger one with a farm on the left. Go through the gate and turn left to go down the hill. Continue down the left edge of the field at first, then bear right to reach the bottom right corner. At the last minute you will see a stile. Over, then over a second stile, along the edge of the field to a small footbridge, over then left towards a building. Just before the building bear right, over the marked stile then across a small field to a bridge. Over then left, between the stream and ditch to a second broken stile. Turn right to follow the left edge of the field and at the end go left through a pair of gates and follow the ditch on the left which soon bears right to join a compound by the road. At the wall cross the ditch to gain the road. Cross and take the footpath opposite (at the wall end). Over a footbridge then along the path into the yard. Continue ahead. There is a cinder path slightly right, with a small, old quarry ahead. Keep to the left of quarry and climb the bank and wall. Climb with small gulley on the right to emerge in a field. Aim for the hedge with a stile to the right. Over and follow the left edge of the field to reach a gate leading onto the road. Right to the start.
