Staffordshire walk: Betley (and map)
This is a rural walk.
The journey:
Start from the left side of Common Lane, from Newcastle, and follow it to a sharp left bend. A footpath sign is on the right.
Go over the stile then across the field aiming for the black and white house, then along the back of the old stables. At the stables follow the fence on the right to a stile in the corner.
Cross the stile and go left along the broad track to the end. Go over another stile and, keeping initially to the fence on the right, go over the stile located just inside the edge of the wood. Follow this track along the wood, past a small field then another wood.
At the end, follow the path round to the right then left, emerging from the fenced path at a large field. Here turn half left to locate a broken stile in the fence/hedge.
Cross the field to another stile. After crossing it, continue ahead, aiming for the top of the small hill.
At the top of the hill continue ahead to join the fence alongside the buildings. You emerge on a small lane where you turn left.
Where the lane turns sharp right, go left along the farm track, soon crossing the railway. Continue along the track then, where the main track goes left through a gate, continue ahead along the wide fenced path to pass the buildings on the right and then emerge on a concrete road.
Follow this and as the road bears slightly right look for a stile in the fence on the left.
Just past this is another stile on the left of the road. Cross this to emerge on a large field. If the path is not clear, aim between the two pylons to soon reach another stile just before a bridge over the railway.
Go over the bridge then keep ahead to the end of the fence on the left, then bear right to cross a stile on the right by a large tree, just before the copse.
Cross the field, aiming to the left of the buildings ahead. Soon the field drops down. Look left to see two stiles on the edge of some rough land. Go over these two stiles and after the second one continue ahead to a ditch then turn right to climb a broken gate on to a track.
Turn left and then right at the edge of the field and follow it round.
As the edge swings left, look for a footpath sign, stile and footbridge on the right. Go over this and cross the small paddock to a hidden stile by the green hut.
Pass in front of the hut and through the gate ahead on to a lane. Follow the lane ahead, bearing left at the T-junction and retrace your steps to the start.
