Staffordshire Walk: Barthomley
This is a good walk for short days. The stiles are generally easy to follow.
The journey:
FROM the centre of the village turn right on the road towards Alsager (north east) passing a pub on your right. Almost immediately look for a driveway on the left and a footpath sign.
Turn left here and after the first house, turn right, along the enclosed path between two houses.
Soon you emerge at a field which you cross. At the next stile bear half-right to the bottom right corner of the field. Go over the stile and head down the next field towards the A500. At the stile at the bottom, go over this and, following the line of the road on the right, continue a short way to reach a stile on the right leading to the A500. Cross this with care and take the steps opposite to a stile. Go over these and on reaching the old road, turn left to take the fenced track on the left. This soon swings right and just before the farm you go over another stile to follow the edge of the fields past the farm to reach a stile and a lane.
Do not cross the stile but turn right, aiming for the farm on the small hillock opposite. Soon you reach a stile, go over this and down towards the edge of a small copse. Follow the stiles to reach the quad bike course (where there are strange bridges). Go over the stile then left, aiming for the farm along the edge of the field. At the corner of the field is a stile on the left, go over this and continue along the right side of the fields to emerge in a large field with power lines.
Bear slightly left here to cross the field and reach a stream. Turn left and at the end of the field, turn right and go over a bridge then left, parallel to the railway track. You emerge on a lane and turn left. Pass the farm lane on the left, then bear right and when the lane bears sharp left, take the footpath on the right, just before the farm. You enter a field then turn slightly right, to follow the line of stiles across several fields (parallel with the railway line). Finally you reach two stiles close together, quite close to the farm. Here you need to bear left, heading for the obvious stile. Go over this and soon you reach a stile and a lane.Turn left here and shortly after it meets a minor road. Turn left here and follow this for a good half mile, eventually crossing over the A500. At the sharp left bend, continue ahead along the lane (footpath sign in the hedge) to enter a small compound. Take the stile ahead and cross the left edge of the fields, and finally the centre of a field to reach a stile and bridleway near a farm. Go over this and then left along the bridleway to reach a road. Cross this, going over a small bridge and aim for the buildings ahead. At the end you reach a footpath sign and lane. Turn right here (unsigned) aiming slightly left of the church tower. Soon you see a dwelling ahead, and aim for the corner of the hedge close by. You go over a stile here and emerge alongside the property and then the lane where you started. At the road, turn right to go back to the start.
