A SUSPICIOUS package found in a Stafford phonebox caused part of the town centre to be closed off by police this lunchtime.
The package, which was later discovered to be harmless, was found in a phone box at the corner of Stafford Street and Princess Street.

Staffordshire Police cordoned off the nearby area just before midday while specially trained officers were at work.
A police spokesperson said: "We take reports of this nature seriously and are always ready to respond proportionately to the information received. Inquiries will now continue to establish who was responsible for placing the package in the phone box."

“Can someone publish the risk assessment that the police followed in determining this package might have been dangerous? Does Stafford hold some fascination for Islamist Fundamentalists? IRA? Iran? Was there a telephoned warning to New Scotland Yard? My own armchair risk assessment concludes it was probably nothing more dangerous than an out of date yoghurt in a suspicious tupperware device. Please don't tell me lives could be, were, might have, potentially should have been at risk, or any other desk-bound catchphrases.”

“so, somebody loses their wellies in a plastic bag and any excuse to close the roads leaving no time left to tackle the small crimes.”
