Stafford Hospital patients and families helped bring 'worst ever' NHS scandal to light, says Robert Francis
PATIENTS and families affected by the 'worst ever' NHS scandal have been praised for helping to bring the failings at Stafford Hospital to light.
Robert Francis QC, who today published his second report into the scandal, said the failure of the NHS system at every level meant numerous warning signs were ignored for years.
But he thanked campaigners such as Cure the NHS founder Julie Bailey for their work in highlighting the appalling standards of care at the hospital.
Between 400 and 1,200 people died unnecessarily at the hospital from 2005 to 2009, with the inquiry hearing harrowing tales of patients being left in soiled bedding, and having to drink dirty water out of vases.

He said: "I want to pay tribute to the many patients and those close to them who bravely and with great dignity gave evidence to me at the two inquiries. It is their efforts which have brought these shocking facts
"It is important for them, and all others who have suffered as they have that the necessary changes are made to protect patients and to provide proper and fundamental standards of care to which we are all entitled.
