DETECTIVES are hunting an armed robber who threatened two women in an off-licence and stole more than £2,000.

A man wearing a white motorcycle helmet targeted the Bargain Booze store in Hartshill Road, Hartshill.

He said he knew where the staff lived and brandished a plastic bag, believed to contain a hand gun.

Shop assistant, Leanne Oakes, aged 22, said: "I've never been so frightened in my whole life. I honestly thought he was going to kill us. I want him to know what he's done, he's really nasty for picking on women and I want justice for what's happened.

"The other lady and I were just talking when the door swung open and he was stood there shouting 'open the till'.

"At first I thought he was messing about. But he had this white plastic bag, with something in it. It looked like a gun and he was pointing it at us. He was very aggressive and kicked the door to get behind the counter.

"Then he told us to get on the floor and not look at him. We opened one till and he took the money and the change bag, but the other till wouldn't open.

"Standing over us he said 'stay on the floor and do not call anyone 'cos I've got someone watching outside and I know where you both live'. We just waited until a customer came in. It felt like forever."

Leanne's mum, Gwen Oakes, aged 49, also works in the Bargain Booze shop, but was not working when the incident happened at 9.15pm on Wednesday.

She said: "I've told my daughter she needs to go and see a doctor for the effects of the shock. The other lady is throwing up and is frightened to be in her house on her own. I don't think we should be working here on our own. It's too dangerous. The bloke was really nasty with them, shouting and making them get on the floor and he took more than £2,000."

The shop, which employs eight people, is usually open from 9am to 10.30pm on weekdays.

Police have released a description of the suspect who was white, about 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build. He was wearing blue jeans and a green puffer type jacket.

He was also wearing a white motorcycle helmet with blue writing on it and spoke with a local accent.

Detective Inspector Jason O'Toole from Stoke-on-Trent said: "Scenes of Crime Officers have made a detailed examination of the scene and detectives are currently reviewing CCTV from the area."

Anyone with information should call police on 0300 123 4455.

“I don't know what this Wayne dude said, but I agree with Andrea, the staff at any Bargain Booze seem to be intelagent and hardworking, witch is more then can be said for some of the custermers. Maybe Wayne is one of these custermers and is confused on the fact that a person can hold down a job.”

“Andrew of Weston Coyney is on the case.
We are constantly advised by the Police not to leave valuables in sight -such as on the back seat of a car etc etc
Yet these retail outlets employ young women who work with a couple of grand in the drawer....

I don't get it? More security is the responsibility of the Proprietors to protect their minimum wage slaves.”

“christopher, Common Sense Land - exactly a point I made, but unfortunately it is the sort of thing that will put customers off and hence dent profits. Ultimately business is blind to the welfare of expendable, unskilled staff unless they are forced via either legislation or labour market forces.

Like it or not, instances such as this are rare enough that it simply doesn't pay to implement expensive technology solutions to a problem that is thankfully relatively rare in this country.”

“Wayne, those comments about the Bargain booze staff are frankly offensive, these people mostly woman are mothers, young girls or people who just want a part time position etc, you have absolutely no right to slate them when you know nothing about them, my mother for instance; worked in a chip shop, she had a degree, was an accountant for a number of years and when she died left a little under 1/4 million pounds... I'm sure she was in a better position both in intelligence and finances than you find yourself in sunny Jim!... stones in glass houses fella...

Steven, unlike others on this thread, you make a good point, the technology is available out there as long as the shop owners are willing to invest in it, the end result is we the customer pays for it, but if its a few pence on a bottle of wine I would quite happily pay a premium for the safety of the staff who serve me.

Like the USA violence seems expediential with each passing year, there is a Thresher store in Kings Norton Birmingham that has an entry system, you ring the bell and they let you in.. that is effective, safe and cheap, perhaps the way to go..”

“Steven, Tunstall - "...leaving a unique DNA code under the skin for up to a month after washing."

Purrrlease! Finding marvel superheroes on the international space station is still a more realistic bet than some of the rubbish you come out with. Keep it coming! It's making my day laughing at this sort of guff! :)”

“lol @Smyon, The Bush (a smokey by any other name would smell just as sweet?)

Malc - you're absolutely right, thats why I added a serious sentence at the end of my comment. I've heard enough of the problems encountered by a couple of former posties who had their van robbed at gunpoint to know how horrific the aftermath of an armed robbery can be for the people at the sharp end of a weapon.

Whilst Steven of Tunstall might THINK he's full of good ideas he seems to live in some sort of fantasy world given the sort of comments he seems to insist on making on any story relating to an armed robbery or burglary. If he can't stand the heat he should stay out of the kitchen!

The fact remains that in the eyes of any faceless business all staff are expendable and losses can be insured against. It just isn't economically viable to introduce expensive technological anti theft measures that won't pay for themselves in a relatively peaceful country like ours.

For example, one of the most effective anti theft measures I have seen was at an off licence in Runcorn where all items had to be passed through a security screen similar to what you might encounter at your local post office. Cheap and effective but not desirable to customers so businesses don't use them for fear of losing money. QED.”
