STOKE Eazy Rider Potters duo Simon Lambert and Tim Webster were crowned National League Pairs champions on Saturday – the side's first piece of silverware for 21 years.

Stoke Spitfires won the Conference League Fours championship in 2006, but the Potters haven't secured a trophy since a Second Division Fours triumph at Peterborough in 1990.

Stoke had to defy the odds at Newport at the weekend after entering the final against the home side as underdogs to clinch the title.

Lambert and Webster both made good starts in the final, but Newport's Todd Kurtz blasted around the outside to take the lead.

But, the Stoke duo knew that if they held on to second and third place, the title was theirs.

Kurtz crossed the line to take four points, but Lambert's three and Webster's two broke home hearts after Jay Herne failed to score in finishing last.

"That was such a good feeling and we wanted it so much for the club and the supporters, particularly those who had travelled down to support us," said Lambert.

"Tim and I got our heads down and made decent starts, but Todd (Kurtz) found a way by.

"We kept our concentration and watched out for each other to make sure that Herne stayed at the back and out of the points."

Newport had been the dominant force in Group A, scoring 26 points with Sheffield/Scunthorpe their nearest challengers on 22 points.

Group B was less clear cut with little to choose between Stoke, Dudley or Mildenhall.

Dudley's Kyle Newman won heat six with Lambert and Webster tucked in behind him – and then Webster and Lambert scored maximum points in heat 10 against Hackney's Shane Hazelden and Barrie Evans.

After two rides, Stoke stood on 12 points, Dudley 11, Buxton 9, Mildenhall 7 and Isle of Wight 6.

Dudley and Mildenhall both took maximum points from their third outings, but Stoke lost ground as Webster ran a last in heat 16 after being pushed wide by Isle of Wight's Rob Smith.

With one ride left, Dudley were on 18 points, Mildenhall 14 and Stoke 16.

Mildenhall then moved in to pole position with maximum points in heat 18 against the Dudley pairing which put the Fen Tigers on 21 points and Dudley 20.

That meant Stoke needed maximum points from their final outing against Buxton in heat 20 to overtake Mildenhall and reach the final.

Lambert and Webster made no mistake in their final group outing to take the seven points needed against their near neighbours, Buxton, to push Mildenhall in to second spot and reach the final against the home pairing and favourites Newport.

"I am so pleased with this result and it was great to see some Stoke supporters in the crowd," said Webster.

"We had a bit of luck on our side at times and got knocked back on others, but we still made it and it feels great to me. Simon and I rode well as a pairing and we did the right things at the right time to make the most of our races.

"Mildenhall did us a favour by beating Dudley when they did, but we still had to do our bit and this is a great result for the club."

Group A: Newport 26, Scunthorpe/Sheffield 22, Belle Vue 17, Hackney 15, Kings Lynn 10.

Group B: Stoke 23, Mildenhall 21, Dudley 20, Buxton 13, Isle of Wight 13.

Final: Stoke 5, Newport 4.
