“The problem I found with the roads during rush hour last night was that parts of the roads you travelled along were ok, not clear, but safe enough to drive on and drivers were able to confidently drive along them. And then as you proceeded further along the same road, the road was not so clear, treading the fine line between compacted snow/slush and the possibility of ice and you had to slow down and adjust your driving to the conditions, and this is probably why there was so much traffic and gridlock. Arguably, the roads didn't seem to have seen much grit and I didn't see a single gritter in Stoke-on-Trent during my journey, but I also think the conditions were so hit and miss that it did make for hazardous driving conditions. All the banks and hills were just lines of traffic, and I even managed to skid down a bank towards a roundabout despite driving slowly and approaching the roundabout with care. The slushy snow was simply gathering in my tyres and leaving me with slicks to drive on.”

“Surprised by the lack of traffic at 5pm actually, roads were a little slippy but I have winter tyres so less of a problem for me.”

“And here's another one for the editing team "Rain is then expected throughout the evening leading to sludge and overnight ice". -Sentinel...
Sludge? I always thought 'sludge' was a mixture of soil and rain -we get it any time of the year -middle of summer; it can be associated also with being greasy, as with the sludge found in the sumps of engines etc... but 'snow' I never found to be associated with sludge. -
'SLUSH'?... is half melted snow we get when it starts to thaw, whether on the pavement or on the roads.... nowt do with soil. Sludge -indeed!

“Snow causes problems anywhere ..but is most likely to on hills. Re the A53 that's .....
Kng St; Basford Bank; Cobridge Rd; Leek NEW Rd between Holden Bridge and Baddeley Green -over Norton X-roads; Longsdon and Ladderidge.
Many cities in England are built on the flat -non-hilly terrain. The North Staffs conurbation, being for the most part situated in the foothills of the Pennines -suffers more so. We're a load of hill-billys -left to grit our teeth rather than our roads.”

“"Snow causing hazardous conditions on the A53 near Burslem" -Sentinel.
Have they never heard of Cobridge? Is Holden Bridge Hanley or Burslem (or Sneyd Green)?
A53 .... Shrewsbury to Buxton: Passing through North Staffordshire via Newcastel; Basford, Etruria; Cobridge; Sneyd Green; Milton; Baddeley Green; Stockton Brook; Endon; Longsdon and Leek.
Depending if you are 'non-local' -not from the Potteries -then you could class Cobridge as Burslem or Hanley -as parts of it are in both ancient boroughs (that right Fred?) ..So arguably, for a 'disinterested' newsman/woman ...the A53 goes through both of them.
Just gets up my nose this 'outside influence' on local matters.... with a complete disregard for 'accurate reporting' -aimed at local readers. Let's have some authenticity where the reporting of local events is concerned..... Not 'broad regional brush-strokes'.”

“lanternhead - town and country tyres lasted an awful long time, it wouldn't do for the manufacturers to make a tyre that last these days.”
