According to daughter Tina, Fay Wrench, from Waterside Drive, Newstead, spends most of her time looking after other people. So she thought a Sentinelle makeover would be the perfect thing to give her 46-year-old mum-of-five the time-out she deserves

The hair

Amy Shipley is a stylist at Toni & Guy in Hanley. She says: "Fay's hair was quite long when she came in, so I decided to cut it into an inverted bob just to give her a bit of a change. She already had layers in but they were quite heavy, so I took some of the weight out to make it look more modern. I finished it off with a blunt fringe.

"It was quite a drastic change for her, but she said she loved it so I'm pleased with how it went. She hadn't had her hair cut in a while, which is why I decided to give her a totally different style."

Rachel Jones, colour technician at Toni & Guy, says: "Fay had coloured her hair herself but applied another colour on top of this to try to make it lighter, so when she came in there was a lot of uneven colour to work with.

"She said she wanted to go lighter, which I thought was a good idea, so I applied a full head of highlights using a pre-lightener, then added Luo Colour to even out the lighter roots and darker ends.

"This took her back to a more natural colour and the result was fantastic."

COST: Fay's cut and colour would have cost £115. To contact the salon call 01782 283100.

The make-up

Karen Davies, manager at Debenhams's Yves Saint Laurent counter in The Potteries Shopping Centre, did Fay's make-up. She says: "Fay doesn't normally wear a lot of make-up so I did her a skin care consultation first to make her aware of our products.

"I used our Topsecrets moisturiser followed by a brush foundation from our Perfect Touch range. After that I used our faithful Touche Éclat around the eyes, which gives an instant lift and brightens the eye area. I then used a silk press powder that sets the foundation and acts as a top layer.

"I highlighted the cheekbones with a soft blusher and for the eye shadow I used our new limited edition gold eye pallet, which really brightens the eyes. I finished the eyes with false eye lash effect mascara, which obviously gives really long lashes.

"The lips were the last thing I did, and for these I used the Rouge Pure Shine No. 8 raspberry lipstick followed by the new Christmas golden gloss lip-gloss."

COST: Makeovers at Debenhams's Yves Saint Laurent counter cost £10, which is redeemable against product purchases.

The clothes

Glenys Corkery, personal shopper at Debenhams, in the Potteries Shopping Centre, Hanley, took charge of Fay's clothes. She says: "When Fay came in she was wearing jeans and a plain T-shirt, so I decided to give her a winter smart/casual look that would complement her new hair.

"I chose a smart pair of grey trousers, priced £40, a silver/pale pink/wine stripped top, priced £35, and a beautiful deep purple cardigan coat, priced £69, all from the Betty Jackson range.

The handbag and shoes which were used to complete the look.

The shoes I chose were a grey pair of shoe boots, priced £45 in a current promotion, from Nine West and I jazzed up the outfit with two links of silver shiny beads from Mood by J Richards, priced £15 each, a silver and pewter bag from Star by Julian Macdonald, priced £40, and a pair of Jasper Conran grey leather gloves, priced £20."

The verdict

"I had a fantastic day and I'm really pleased with my new look.

"I'd like to give a special thanks to Rachel and Amy at Toni & Guy because they were brilliant with me and I absolutely love my new hair style.

"Karen and Glenys were also great at Debenhams.

"I liked the make-up and thought the clothes they chose really suited me.

"It was quite a drastic change for me but I loved my hair straight away, so I don't think it will take too much getting used to."
