PLANS to expand a primary school are still set to go ahead despite objections.

Cheshire East Council wants to increase the capacity of Wheelock Primary School, in Sandbach, from 210 to 315 places.

It is aimed at addressing a shortage of school places across Sandbach, with pupil forecasts showing an extra 144 places will be needed by 2017.

A decision over the proposal was delayed after concerns were raised about the impact the expansion would have on six other schools in the area.

But the council has now approved the latest stage of the expansion plan which would come into force in September, 2014.

Lorraine Butcher, strategic director for children, families and adults, said: "The current number of pupils registered at the school is 231. The current admission number of the school is 30 and the proposed admission number will be 45."

Residents are being consulted on this latest proposal until March 20.
