A £2 MILLION highways project that will support the regeneration of a derelict site is due to start shortly.

Staffordshire County Council will be carrying out the work, which will serve the St George's Park development, in Stafford. It is being funded by Bovis Homes.

A total of 250 houses and 120 apartments will be built on the site of the town's former St George's psychiatric hospital.

The highways changes include widening Queensway to create additional lanes, building a link road for the new housing estate, and creating a bridge over Pearl Brook.

There will also be a signalised junction on the A34, a new footpath and a cycle route.

Preparation work starts on May 8, with the main work getting underway on May 28. It is due to finish in November.

Councillor Mike Maryon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The team will do all it can to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, working weekends where necessary."
