AFTER three years of studying, most students would be spending the summer relaxing but dedicated Matthew Jones is doing two jobs so he can afford to take part in a sponsored bike ride covering more than 1,000 miles.

The 21-year-old graduate from Keele University is hoping to raise more than £1,000 for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice when he cycles from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Matthew and university friend Sean White, aged 23, leave for Scotland on August 10 and will set off on the country-crossing cycle ride on August 13, hoping to complete the route by August 31.

Matthew, who graduated with a 2:1 in Applied Environmental Science and Physical Geography, has a special connection with the charity after two of his relatives received care at the hospice.

Matthew, of Thomas Avenue, Newcastle, said: "My grandad and great uncle were in the Douglas Macmillan Hospice and unfortunately both died of cancer.

"The hospice looked after them so I wanted to do something to say thank you."

Now Matthew is doing two jobs so he can complete his fund-raising bike ride.

He said: "Virgin and CrossCountry trains are now paying for our train tickets to get to the start and get home at the end. We've put in our own funds for everything and it's been a bit costly."

Matthew's main expense has been his bike, after managing to break two bicycles in his first two training sessions.

He said: "The first time I attempted to cycle to Tittersworth reservoir I got there and seven miles back before my back axle snapped and I was forced to abandon the bike. A few days later I attempted to ride my dad's bike and it fell apart in a cartoon comical style."

In between work Matthew manages to fit in three 10-mile training sessions during the week, in preparation for the 60-mile bike ride he does at the weekend.

Matthew's efforts have not gone unnoticed and now mother Gill Jones has nominated him for a Sentinel Our Heroes award in the Charity Champion category.

Gill said: "Matthew is determined to raise money for such a special place and it'd be nice if this could get some recognition."

Sean, who will be accompanying Matthew on the ride, has obtained a first in Physical Geography and Media.

Matthew, left, said: "Sean's a very good friend of mine. It's good to work as a team."
