Review: The Signal 25th Birthday Concert
The Signal 25th Birthday Concert Trentham Gardens
IT'S 25 years since Signal radio started broadcasting in North Staffordshire and Cheshire. To mark the event, three of the top musicians of the era performed last night at Trentham Gardens, bringing a mix of sounds and styles from the 1980s.
Technical problems before the concert left people queuing for up to two hours and resulted in schedule delays.
This was not the best start and meant that Ali Campbell, pictured, – former lead vocalist for UB 40 – had a tough job in warming up the audience.
Thankfully Campbell's distinctive voice and his new groups' deliciously mellow brand of soft reggae, proved to be quality. The set included many well-known songs such as "Kingston Town" and "Falling in love".
Go West were the next on stage providing a great contrast of music with an energetic performance of upbeat dance tracks. The Duo introduced more recent material as well as 80s hits such as "Kings of Wishful Thinking" and a cover of "Vertigo". Unfortunately, the performance seemed plagued with sound quality difficulties and the set was cut short due to the initial delays.
The final headline act was the Human League, which personally I enjoyed the most. The group's crisp, electro pop style has stood the test of time with vocalist Phil Oakley's deep voice sounding clear, strong and simply wonderful! The set commenced with a powerful delivery of "Lebanon", instantly energising the crowd. Hits that followed included "Mirror Man" "Tell me When" and "Fascination". It may have been a quarter of a century since they first found fame but band members still looked as well as sounded enviably cool! Again the set seemed short, but the League responded to demands for an encore, leaving the audience together in "Electric Dreams".
It must be said that on this special night, the audience were also stars, and remained determined to have a great time through long delays, technical hitches and shortened performances.

“ok i agree the queues were ridiculous, signal 1 didnt seem to care about leaving us all waiting for hours on end, but when it actually started it was brilliant. i dont know whay Ali Campbell bothered sticking around, he was great, but unfortunately most of the crowd were booing him for ages. it wasnt his fault. his only faults i think was that he didnt sing higher ground or red red wine. but the classics he did sing such as i cant help falling in love, kingston town, running free & charles & eddies would i lie to you, were worth me waiting in the queue. go west were ace, i had been looking forward to seeing them for months. every song was great, & singing vertigo was just a shock to me, never thought id here go west singing a u2 song. they did all the best 1s, & we close our eyes is 1 of the best songs you could wish to hear live. & faithful was ace, & king of wishful thinking, well the crowd went nuts, was great atmosphere. human league were also brilliant. i was gutted that he didnt sing human, but he still did so many of the great classics & ending on together in electric dreams was just perfect end to the crappy start. sod the people who moaned about the queues, yeah they were bad but the concert was ace so there you go”

“We were backstage at the concert and i have to say i was dissappointed at the delay in the start time of the show but it was all down to technical difficulties, a lot of people seem to be triyng yo blame Ali fot the delay but how is it his fault when he recieved a phone call to say that there was a delay so there was no point in him turning up for his sound check at the previously selected time, he still had to wait for a further hour to do his sound check after his second selected time. Who can be blamed for the technical difficulties that happened??? For example who would you blame in your house hold if your TV went on the blink, 1 of the actors in the soap you were about to watch??? I dont think much more than an appology from signal for the lack of communication to the people waitng in the que can be done. I dont think the event organisers or the artists were to blame for the hold up. Watching from backstage we could see everything that was being done to keep the show on that night and i thank the organisers for a top day and night!!!!”

“I wa at trentham Gardens inside the gates at about 4.30 we were guests of Ali Campbell won threw a comp i live in Chesterton. Ali should have been there at 3pm but he got a call from the organizers to say they were running late for his sound cheack so that gave us more time with him. When we got to the gardens Go west were doin there sound check and Ali and the Guys couldnt get ion to do theres. By the time they had finished we were already 2 hours behind and siganal were thinking of pulling Ali from the show so they could carry on. They were messing about so much then 45 min later decided that Ali could go on. THEN TO ADD TO THE DELAY GO WEST REFUSED TO Take there equipment of the stage for ali's to go on. SO IT HAD NOTHIONG TO DO WITH ALI BEEN ARIGENT IT WAS GO WEST THAT WERE BEEN A PAIN IN THE BUTT HOLDING THINGS UP. ALIS'S BAND HAD TO USE SOME OF GO WESTS EQUIPMENT OR THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN PULLED FROM THE SHOW. SO WITH THIS aLI WAS DOIN HIS SOUND CHECK WEN PEOPLE WERE COMING IN. Signal came on the stage wen Ali went of and gave the crowd 15MIN BEFORE ALI CAME BACK ON. It was badlt organised and siganal asked Ali to come back and do another show but Kim His manager said not a chance. I know im a massive fan and friend of Ali's and you may think im siding with him but this is the truth. Ali turned up ready to do his stuff on time he was early actually it was every1 else that was messing him and the band about, The security didnt have a clue wat was goin on so at the gates they said it was Ali been a drama queen but this is utter crap. I feel for the people who didnt get to see Ali because i know a lot of people who i know who were goin just to see Ali, I paid for my tickets also and i would have been deverstated if i ahd to be in all that mess with been so late opening the gate. Personly i think they should appologize and give an explanation but i can promise this is the truth we were there backstage most of the day with Ali n the band they were just as angry for been messed about. “28 of us hired a bus to go to the 'saturday shambles' (dis) organised by signal.we got there at 6pm to find the queue! there was no security, people were queue jumping, we told the only security man about, who said 'what do u want me to do..im on my own' we were told at 6.20 there was health and safety issues but the gates would open in 15 mins. we got into the 'field' at 8.20 when Ali campbell was on..he went on for an hour, so we missed out on the human league..who we really wanted to see.
i have emailed Lisa Hughes twice at signal, but ive had no reply, we would like a refund for the farce that was a signal organised event..i have the receipt for the tickets as the security people refused to give us our stubs back!! not a good evening! we will never go to another signal organised thing again!!”

“Having arrived at Trentham at 4pm and queued for 4 hours with out getting in due to all the problems, my husband and i decide that we had to leave as we had arranged babysitter for the evening based on a 7pm start time. As we were still along way back in the queue we felt them the concert would finish till 11ish which ment not gettin back home till 11:30 - 12 with all the traffic so we left after talking to two sercurity guys whom seemed to be as clueless as everyone else but did say we should contact signal for a refund on Monday. Which i did. To be told today by email reply that no refunds will be given as the concert still went ahead!! But not at the times stated on the ticket!! What a con... will never attend any other signal run events. They are a waste of money. Wonder what trading standards will make of this when i call them!?”

“SATURDAY NIGHT FIASCO. We arrived at Trentham Gardens at 1.30 (first in the queue) followed by thousands of spectators around 5.30 expecting to be able to sit down, enjoy picnics and a few drinks before the music started scheduled for 7pm. What a disappointment, we were all left standing outside not moving for a further 2 hours, frustrated and with an explanation of ¿Technical Faults¿ what a load of rubbish!!! We were then moved in to the Gardens in another queue for another 1hr. Whilst standing waiting people were using the gardens as a toilet as there were no facilities until it was too late, one woman stooped (stools etc) in a corner in front of everyone it was absolutely disgusting. At that point some people turned back and went home. It was almost 8.30 by the time we finally managed to get in only to find that there was about 100 people already in who had enjoyed a picnic and had had a few drinks. We asked them how long they had been there they told us from 5.30; Not very fair to the rest of us. We then had to set out our picnics etc in the dark. Also Ali Campbell had already started before the crowds had even entered the field. It is terrible that Signal didn't offer any proper apology. Considering how long the delays were it didn¿t do any favours for Ali he sounded awful. Go West were OK and we didn¿t hang around to hear Human League. We WON¿T be returning to another Signal event. We are waiting for a full refund!”
