FAMOUS for his incredibly loud shirts and wacky hair, the mock the week star, noted for his one liners, arrives in Stoke in the midst of his mammoth ‘On The Road’ tour.

Born in Kew Gardens to a physicist father and a housewife mother, Milton Jones childhood wasn’t a particularly stressful one. Indeed he quips “I had a nice suburban upbringing, went to a good school and mixed with normal people. Obviously my only worry growing up was that if I ever wanted to become a comedian I would have nothing to be really angry about. “

The King of the one liner world: Milton Jones.

His 90 date tour, is comprised mostly of the one liners that made him famous on Mock the Week and Radio 4, the show is pun central and Milton Jones is a master of his trade though he loses the ‘what am I doing here’ delivery style he perfected on TV.

Although he plays down his obsession with one liners as “just having a short attention span”, there is real thought in his work. “I think I appeal to other people who have short concentration spans. (Not that they will have read this far.) I think if a one-liner succeeds you put a tiny but entertaining cartoon in peoples’ heads.”

Which is exactly what he did, some of his finest pieces had the gentlemen beside me literally gasping for breath.

The First act was him masquerading as his Grandfather, he wove his 2 routines seamlessly together, bringing material from the first piece into his second with huge laughs.

Support act Chris Martin (not from Coldplay) did his job superbly, warming the crowd up with some great observational comedy.

Though at times he looks like he’s wandered in by accident, Jones’ wit is undeniable, though I wasn’t a particular fan of the cringeworthy pictures routine which he did both as his grandfather and himself.

The man has a talent for puns like no other, he also turns briefly musical, in a quirky routine that encompasses the famous invasion of Poole Harbour by the Japanese Karaoke pilots, a fantastic piece of word play, which along with legions of his other gags, puts him right up there as the King of the one liner world.
