HONEYMOON Suite is set, appropriately, in a honeymoon suite in a hotel in Bridlington, Yorkshire.

Bridlington is not far from Scarborough – indeed, there is mention of Scarborough in the play – which is Alan Ayckbourn territory. It is perhaps no surprise that Richard Bean's Honeymoon Suite contains more than a passing nod to Ayckbourn. The play might be described as Ayckbourn with grit.

Whereas the Scarborough master deals essentially with the middle class, Bean's focus is on the working class and, in particular, on the declining fishing community in Hull. However, the juxtaposition of time – three phases in the life of one couple are presented simultaneously – is reminiscent of Ayckbourn, for example in How The Other Half Loves. Ayckbournesque, too, is the witty, trenchant dialogue which leaves the audience one moment laughing and, in the next, reflective.

Honeymoon Suite traces the married life of Izzy and Eddie over almost 50 years. They are seen on their wedding night, on their silver wedding anniversary, and then some 23 years later. The play is an anatomy of a marriage, following the hopes and disappointments of a couple portrayed by three sets of actors.

George Banks, Martin Miller and Colin Tarrant play newlywed Eddie, shady businessman Eddie, and eccentric Eddie. Young Eddie's ambitions, it seems, can be realised only by crime – a crime which returns to haunt him in the closing moment of the play. Eddie, in his different guises, speaks some wonderful lines. If Samaritans cared about us, he says, they would contact us, and not vice versa. Bankers, he asserts, are people who lend umbrellas only when the sun is shining.

His wife Izzy, played by Sherry Baines, Natalie Burt and Stephanie Turner, is a more focussed, intellectual person who passes her husband on her way up as he is on his way down. All six actors are neatly balanced and, in this polished production by Tim Luscombe, offer a seamless commentary on the development not just of this marriage but of marriage in general.

Honeymoon Suite runs until Saturday, April 25. Tickets are available on 01782 717962.
