THE construction of a narrow gauge railway at a country park is nearing completion.

Moseley Railway Trust has finished building the main running line of the Apedale Valley Light Railway, which runs 500 metres between Apedale Heritage Centre and Apedale Road.

Volunteers carried out tracklaying throughout the winter, and they will now set about fitting point levers and locks and ballasting.

It is expected the first phase of the 2ft gauge railway will be open to the public later in the year, with a gala opening taking place in September.

Trust chairman Phil Robinson said: "The volunteers have worked through the hardest winter for 30 years.

"This railway will make a major contribution to tourism in Staffordshire."

In the future the trust hopes to extend the line further into Apedale Community Country Park.
