AN ARMOURED locomotive built in 1917 will be on display at a railway event to mark Remembrance Day.

Moseley Railway Trust will mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War with an open day at Apedale Heritage Centre, Loomer Road, in Chesterton.

A collection of exhibits relating to the military light railways, built for the British Army in France and Belgium to supply the frontline forces during the war, will be on display.

The event will also feature the "Tin Turtle" – a protected (armoured) Motor Rail locomotive built in 1917.

A spokesman said: "With the cessation of hostilities, equipment that had not been delivered to the war fronts, and equipment that had been repatriated from the battlefields was collected together in storage depots. By 1920, this war-surplus equipment was made available to the civilian market, and industry was quick to take up this cheap railway equipment. "This equipment became the catalyst for many industrial narrow gauge railways.

"The open day on Sunday will commemorate the end of the Great War, and also the part narrow gauge railways have played with the British Military for more than 90 years."

The event runs from 10.30am until 5pm, with the two-minute silence observed at 11am. There will be a suggested admission donation of £4 adults, £2 concessions.
