MOVES to speed up the transfer of almost 800 council jobs to the private sector will be debated by a scrutiny panel tomorrow.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants to form a strategic partnership with a private company to run some administrative services from next year.

Three firms are currently bidding for the £250 million, 10-year contract.

The winner will move to the proposed Central Business District, in Hanley, and will become the anchor tenant for the development.

The council's executive and members' board agreed on April 29 to complete the jobs transfer in 12 months, instead of 24, in order to support the £120 million business district scheme.

But six councillors, led by Non-Aligned Group spokesman councillor Mick Salih, have since demanded a review.

They want to assess the impact on Stoke town centre and any financial implications there may be.

The issues will be discussed by the transformation and resources overview and scrutiny committee.
