BRIGHT IDEAS: Schoolchildren put the finishing touches to a supermarket's Christmas decorations after winning a competition to design the store's baubles.

St Chad's Primary school, in Red Street, helped decorate the Christmas tree at Sainsbury's, Hanley, with card baubles they had decorated with glitter.

Department manager Ian Richardson said: "St Chad's designed the best baubles and got to put them up on their tree and won £200 for their school.

"The baubles look great in the store and it's clear a lot of effort went into them."

This weekend the store will be giving out balloon models and the festive flavour continues next week with carols on Monday and a mince pie eating contest on Tuesday. Each day up until Christmas Eve the store will also be giving presents away to a randomly selected customer.

Then, on Christmas Eve a lucky shopper will receive 12 presents.

“My son was one of the six children aswell. He was so excited to have won and go to Sainsburys, and so excited that he was going to be in the Sentinel ......how disappointing for a group of 6 year olds

Well done to Oliver and his friends!”

“I fully agree with Rebecca's comments above! The other children should have been recognized and pictured rather than just one. Even my daughter is very upset by not being recognized by Sentinel. She was so excited after speaking to Sentinel Photographer when the pictures were being taken, that she rung me when she got home to tell me the news. She reminded me on Friday to get the newspaper but it was a shame to see only one name! Not happy with you Sentinel!!”

“re: bright ideas, i am upset to see that after 6 children from miss steeles class won the prize of £200 they failed to get any recognition whatsoever. This was a competition that 6 children won but only one recieved any recognition by the sentinel. My son also helped to win this prize for st chads, and hasnt even recieived his name in the paper. Thank you..as a result of this my son is quite upset after been told to tell his family to buy this paper. If 6 children won they all deserve the same recognition.”
