SHOE PEOPLE: Youngsters modified their footwear ready for a symbolic walk to grill local councillors.

Sixty-five pupils from Wolstanton High School walked to the civic offices in Newcastle where they took part in a question-and-answer session with councillors.

The pupils, from Years Seven to 10, did the walk in footwear they had modified as part of a project called Wolstanton Wonders Why.

Gill Lovatt, director of learning for RE at the school, said: "We held a special day where children could bring in a pair of shoes which were special to them. They brought in football boots they had scored a goal in, and one pupil brought in some walking boots he wore when he climbed a mountain with his dad.

"From there we decided together that they should make designs on footwear and go out and ask questions to the local councillors to better understand the things around them. It's all symbolic and based on the idea of walking in somebody else's shoes."
