Property worth conserving
A giant, heated conservatory, four double bedrooms and a quiet family location are among the attractions of the Grayburns' home in Trentham, Liz Rowley found out.
BARRY and Judy Grayburn may have only lived in their current home for three years, but they are no strangers to Stoke-on-Trent.
Originally from Leeds, the couple first moved to the area in 1974 and remained for a few years before employment took them elsewhere. Now, as they plan to return to their roots, their four-bedroom detached house in Consall Grove is back on the market.
"The house was built about 20 years ago and the couple who had it before us, Mr and Mrs Moss, did a wonderful job with it," says Mrs Grayburn, a secondary school supply teacher.
"We have decorated it and done bits and bobs while we've been here, but it was so well maintained there was very little that needed doing."
The large bay window and double garage to the front of the house give some indication of its size, but it is inside that the true depth of the property becomes apparent.
The lounge is fresh and airy with double doors leading to the dining room, while the conservatory, which sits behind this room and the kitchen, is particularly impressive.
"The lounge and dining room are both great for entertaining because they open out to create a large space," says Judy, a grandmother of five who is in her 60s.
"But what really drew us to the property was the conservatory at the back. I don't think I've ever seen one as big as this.
"Everyone who walks in is impressed because it is so spacious. Mr and Mrs Moss used to have a snooker table in the middle which gives some indication of the size, and my grandchildren love it because they can spread all their things out on the floor."
The conservatory also benefits from the house's central heating system.
"This is lovely because it means in the summer you can have it cool and in the winter it can be warm, so it's used all year round," says Judy.
But the conservatory wasn't the only thing that attracted the couple to the house.
Judy says: "The four bedrooms are all big enough to hold double beds, which is great for any family looking to move here, and the area itself is brilliant if people are looking to bring up kids.
"It's a very quiet, secure estate and we've found Trentham a lovely place to live. It's also great that we have places like Trentham Gardens and the Gladstone Pottery Museum close by."
The fully-fitted farmhouse-style kitchen makes this an attractive buy for those looking to ease the costs of moving in the current climate.
"The kitchen is superb and doesn't need anything doing to it at all," says Judy. "It has a built-in fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, double electric oven and large five-ring hob that is brilliant to use and keep clean."
Next to the kitchen, the couple have created a cosy snug, which is a great place to relax and unwind.
"We do like this room," says Judy. "Before we moved it had a round table in it taking up the space, but we thought it would suit us better if we transformed it into a comfortable snug. It also has French doors leading into the conservatory so you can create extra space if you want to."
A good-sized bathroom and en suite master bedroom make this home even more appealing to those looking for space and comfort and while Judy is looking forward to returning to Leeds, she will be sad to leave.
"It will be great to head back to Leeds because this is where we both come from," she says. "But we have really enjoyed living here.
"It will make a lovely family home for someone and I'm sure whoever buys it will get as much pleasure out of living here as we have."
