Prince Charles to visit Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate city's centenary
THE PRINCE of Wales is to visit Stoke-on-Trent next week to celebrate the 100 years of the federation of the six towns.
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will arrive on February 19 to visit key sites and meet people across the city.
The Royal visit will take in the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Bethesda Chapel and Emma Bridgewater factory in Hanley, as well the Kings Hall and Civic Centre in Stoke and Dudson factory in Tunstall.
It is expected to be a highlight of a year-long series of events to mark the centenary.
Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Jean Bowers said: "We are delighted to welcome The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to Stoke-on-Trent in our 100th year.
"Their visit will be extremely special for our city and for everyone who meets them. We are very much looking forward to what will be the high point of our centenary celebrations."
Council leader Ross Irving added: "We are particularly thrilled that Their Royal Highnesses will visit the Staffordshire Hoard exhibition [which is going on show at the Potteries Museum]. They will be the first Royalty to handle some of the items for more than 1,300 years."

“I for one beleieve that a visit from Prince Charles and Camilla will be a welcome occasion. Anyone who thinks otherwise should have their head seeing to. What better positive publicity can a city get. people should be celebrating this instead of moaning. As Paul states; the Royal Family, against all differing opinions, bring a massive amount of money into the country. For once look on the good side of things.”

“To all the people who are moaning about the Royal visit - what is your problem? I¿m not a fan of the monarchy but I can see the positives in this. It¿s good publicity for the city and will get us in the national headlines for all the right reasons. So don¿t be so miserable. Honestly, some people whinge when there¿s bad news and whinge when there¿s good news. If you¿ve got nowt nice to say about anything then just keep quiet.”

“How much money will this Royal visit bring IN to the city, in terms of business and tourism? You simply can't buy the kind of free (positive) mainstream media publicity they provide.
I suspect the overall burden to the taxpayer is negligible.”

“Fred Smythe - I couldn't agree more. I think the people of Stoke have a right to see what this is going to cost - and how the bill will be footed.
As for Charles - don't kid yourself. That man is so far removed from reality - he may as well be high on heroin. Do you seriously think he has any idea what the everyday daily life is like for your average Stokie - let alone really give a damn...
Get real.”

“and how much is this little ''jolly'' going to cost us the council tax payer??? this city is a shambles, the council are looking to cut services, you can bet the council tax is going to rise, people are losing their jobs, the pottery industry is decimated,it has been stated that stoke will be one of the last places to recover from the recession, most people have not had a pay rise in this area for years [local businesses state the recession but still make profits]....this area is still an under privelaged area with no signs of recovery...i have some news for the powers that be in the council...the majority of people in this area dont feel like celebrating 100 years of stoke on trent what is there to celebrate??? the people of this area were probably happier in 1910 that we are living in this dump in 2010.....”

“I bet they won't be showing him the vast areas of derelict land left from the collapse of the pottery industries plus the coal pits iron and steel works only to be replaced by over sized ware houses employing foreign workers on minimum wage's, or the after math of this disastrous regeneration excise where hundreds of house have been compulsory purchase then flatten and then nothing done with the land leaving parts of the city looking like a waste land.”
