President stands firm in BNP row
UNDER-FIRE students' union leader Assed Baig has broken his silence to say he has no intention of resigning.
The Staffordshire University Students' Union president has been attacked by the British National Party (BNP) for linking a posting on the union's website to a confidential list of the party's members' names and postcodes.
The link was removed within 24 hours after The Sentinel contacted the union, following an outcry from students.
But the BNP has since complained to Staffordshire Police that there was a breach of data protection and race laws.
And more than 1,000 students have subsequently spoken out against Mr Baig's policies and leadership on social networking website Facebook.
Councillor Alby Walker, BNP group leader on Stoke-on-Trent City Council, has now called for Mr Baig's suspension from the university, for inciting harassment of his party's members.
But Mr Baig has rounded on his attackers and accused them of trying to undermine him because of his religion and his anti-racist beliefs.
He said: "I think this criticism from the BNP is rich. They seem to be up in arms about the website link, but if they've got nothing to hide then what is the issue?
"Maybe they should stop trying to capitalise on this and rile up students on Facebook. I believe they are just out to silence a Muslim, Asian person who is campaigning against the BNP.
"They are using underhand tactics to try to get rid of me and I believe they are behind the Facebook campaign against me, because they see me as a threat.
"I'm not stepping down, because I know the vast majority of students are behind me."
Mr Walker says Mr Baig has overstepped the mark and should stand down.
He has made a formal complaint to Professor Christine King, Staffordshire University vice-chancellor, accusing the union president of inciting students to target and harass BNP members living near the university's Stoke campus.
And Mr Walker said he was particularly concerned about a potential backlash against members who attend the university for leadership training.
In his email to Professor King, he said: "This was provocation and incitement to harass the members of a legal, non-violent political organisation.
"I urge you now to suspend Mr Baig from your university to promote and aid community cohesion."
Mr Walker is still awaiting a response to his complaint.
But he said: "I think the reaction of students to what Mr Baig has done shows they believe he is in the wrong.
"Whether they agree with our policies and principles or not, they realise that what he did is fundamentally wrong.
"I believe he is a dangerous person to have around and the university would be a better place without him."
A university spokesman said: "The university is responding to Mr Walker's complaint directly and does not wish to make any further comment."

“Once again there are comments made here that appear to speak for the majority. Such a poiseness campaign, I am disgusted with the selfish and narrow minded attitude of some of our students. Much is made of the 1000 people who were members of a facebook page (deleted by facebook because of the racist comments and personal attacks on Mr Baig), yet many of those people were either not students at all or did not attend Staffs university.
To the person who says they have not witnessed any racism on campus, just because you have not personally seen something does not mean it does not exist. Besides which, campaigning against racism is not just about what might or might not happen within the university, it is about the experience of some students in the whole of society.
Assed Baig and all of this years union officers are doing an excellent job tackling all sorts of issues that effect all students. I am proud to support them all.”

“Charlotte is someone on facebook who is trying to get people to campaign agaisnt racism.
Just for the record
We do not care!
There is no racism on campus that I have ever witnessed, all the students get on, but well there is now due to our president trying to create tension!
We just want a president who listens to the majority, not ignores them and then ridicules them, we actually do WANT police on campus, its a brilliant idea.
So Assed, if you feel intimidated by the police then you obviously hiding something? As you wouldnt be intimidated if not...
As PC Emery is police and is a warrant card carrying police officer, he can walk into the SU whenever he likes, so Keith go for it!”

“The BNP want community cohesion. Pull the other one! I will be writing to the VC asking that as students we don't feel safe with the BNP on Campus and therefore they shouldn't be receiving leadership training from our University. As for the idea that Students at staffs are gonna go and beat up the BNP, what a load of nonsense. That might be the BNP's mind set.”

“I do not think Baig should be suspended from the university, but he should definitely leave his position.
For me, this is not a race issue at all, even if this is how Baig views it. His interview on Staffslive, where he was pitted against PC Keith Emery in a discussion on his decision to ban the police from part of the Union building was frankly embarrassing and was the point where he lost my faith. He came across as a child throwing a temper tantrum and emerged from it with very little credit.
I hope he is removed as president before he embarrasses himself and the people he represents on a national, rather than local platform.”

“Mr Baig wrote an offensive article that contained the following:
"The reason why white people point fingers at black people is because that they need an enemy, a `bad guy´."
Why are people supporting a man who has made such racist and unfounded claims on an educational website? From the previous comments - I cannot understand the support for this man but it seems to mainly emanate from students at the Stoke campus where Mr Baig must be having an effect. I'm from Stoke myself living away and I think this man should have been sacked weeks ago.”

“I am a 'normal' student. I have a brain. Assed Baig has my full support.
It has been said within these comments that "... the fact that the majority of students feel he does not represent them. " This is an assumption made by the writer. This years elected officer, lead by our democratically elected president, Mr Baig, are proving themselves to be both active and committed to furthering the welfare and interests of all students.
I do not belive that the link in question should have been posted. However, it has been removed, it does not detract from the fact that Mr Baig is doing a good job and even a cursery glance at the arguements that followed its publication soon show that for a large proportion of his detractors it was merely the excuse they have used to attempt to oust him.
As for the argument that 'politics' is nothing to do with students and that to campaign against racism and racist organisations has nothing to do with students interests....please explain to me how that works. The university, its students and staff are part of society, part of the community. However much some would like there to be, there is not a 'student life' and a 'real life' there is only one life and it includes all sorts of uncomfortable things like politics and racism.”

“@ Darren, Stone
He would have you think this is all just about the BNP and racism, this however is not true.
The link issue just opened up a bigger can of worms in the whole equation. It's about abuse of power, not listening or respecting students, his one-way views on racism and more.
As usual this incident is being turned into a race issue by him. It has nothing to do with the BNP or race it's just what people would have you believe.”
