Marc Richards's first-half winner was the ideal way for the striker to celebrate his 200th appearance for Vale.

The 29-year-old skipper showed his predatory instincts midway through the first half by heading home his 16th goal of the campaign.

Sean Rigg swung over a perfect cross for the striker to power an eight-yard header into the net via a slight deflection to put the valiants on their way.

The visitors' cause was not helped by Tom Parkes's moment of madness just before the break.

The Bristol man was given his marching orders for a rash and dangerous challenge on Chris Shuker.
