MICKY Adams is ready to swap style for substance to solve Port Vale's home problems.

He says he might have to change the team's attractive style of play to cope with the heavy Vale Park pitch.

The Valiants go into today's clash at home to Plymouth (3pm) having picked up five wins in 12 home games, compared to eight victories in 13 attempts on the road.

Adams is keen to address the issue after his side's third home defeat of the season against Fleetwood on Tuesday.

"We might have to adapt our style somewhat," he said.

"With the greatest of respect, we go from a sand-based training ground pitch and sand-based pitches away from home to what the other night, let's face it, was a bog.

"We are not looking for an excuse, but it doesn't help.

"I'm not having a go at the ground staff and Steve Speed because they do a great job.

"All we saw from Fleetwood was hitting it long into the channels and turning our people around.

"Maybe that's the way forward."

But Adams insists there is not a massive problem at Vale Park as they attempt to stay in touch with leaders Gillingham.

"We've won five, drawn four and lost three at home. Crisis? What crisis?" he added.

Vale could hand to debut to new signing Chris Birchall this afternoon.

The midfielder, signed from MLS side Columbus Crew until the end of the season, received international clearance yesterday and could replace Sam Morsy, who has been ruled out with a gashed leg.

Centre-half John McCombe starts a lengthy spell on the sidelines, having injured his medial knee ligament, but skipper Doug Loft (calf) returns to the squad.

PORT Vale Supporters' Club are holding a meeting at Tommy Cheadle's pub at Vale Park on Wednesday (7pm).
