PORT Vale's new manager Dean Glover has urged supporters to give him time to rescue the Valiants.

The 44-year-old former assistant manager acknowledges that many Vale fans didn't want him to get a job he finally landed yesterday.

Some have criticised the board for not looking outside the club for a new boss, while others favoured coach Andy Porter, the only other candidate considered as Vale couldn't afford to appoint from outside.

Glover knows some fans blame him for poor results when he was assistant to Martin Foyle and then Lee Sinnott – and when he was caretaker boss for an eight-game spell last season.

However, he has urged his critics to reserve judgment until he has had time to lead the team as a permanent manager.

He said: "Some of the criticism is unfair. I have been here with two other managers and they (critics) obviously feel that outside influences would have been better.

"But what I can honestly say is the people who are still at the club are passionate and loyal to the club and want it to go forward.

"Please judge me in time. I believe we can turn it around, but it isn't going to be overnight.

"I know I am going to be in for some flak because I know there were people against me.

"Hopefully there are some good people there who are for me. Judge me down the line. Please."

Glover inherits a team which is 19th in the League Two table and on a run of six successive defeats. He has no money to improve a squad assembled by predecessors Foyle and Sinnott, but the directors have vowed to try to find ways of raising cash.

Glover added: "The budget has been spent. The board are trying desperately hard to generate some funds.

"I don't know how quickly that will be, but we are prepared to work with the team we have got and we know what is in front of us. It is not going to be an easy time."

Glover's job will at least be made easier by having the support of his nine-man board. They voted unanimously to give him the job.

Predecessor Lee Sinnott was only appointed on a 5-4 split, a situation Glover says affected their relationship.

He said: "I think towards the end, yes it did.

"Unfortunately, outside things got in the way and things didn't work out as they could have.

"But we were always there to help him. We were never against him."

Glover's new contract is set to be negotiated this week. The manager will also be allowed to appoint his own backroom staff, including an assistant manager.

Porter and youth coach Mark Grew are among the candidates for the job.

“If the board had to promote from within why didnt they go for Boomer or carry on the practice with fans phoning in to vote for the player who they wanted to play.
This must be better than Glovers pick a team out of a hat.
Tudor on left wing,Richards in midfield and the long ball tactic of pumping high balls up to 5ft Luke Rodgers. Glover,s only pedigree is Manager at Stone Dominoes so how does that make him suitable as a League Manager? Why are the Board 100% behind Dean Glover when 90% of the fans dont want him. Just shows how out of touch they are with the real supporters. The mistake they made was giving him a contract when Sinnott came.
Why didnt they wait until the end of the season. He had his chance and blew it. I have been a regular Vale supporter for over 40 years and this team of free transfers [nobody else wanted] and non league players is not good enough to keep us in division two.
You have taken us from a decent Division one side to a poor second division side losing at home to teams like Macclesfield,Accrington Stanley and Notts County.
You should offer all the 6500 supporters who backed you by buying season tickets a refund because you wont get 6500 next year if this carries on.
Put the club up for sale before its too late to stop us dropping into the conference and see if there are any takers. You cant keep hanging on waiting for a miracle to happen.”

“so dean glover is pondering about his assistant (from within of course) ,well! it appears that andy porter was not the flavour of the month during the county game (standing at least 25 feet away from the king in waiting ), so it looks like grewey as assistant and andy as the perennial bridesmaid again, same three different order (bit like a reverse tricast). but it poses the question, who would want to be laughing boys assistant, relegation to the blue square is something you don't want on your cv.”

“So now the truth sort of comes out.

Sinnott - like him or loathe him was never given a chance. Thebackstabbing behind the scenes has been going on from day one it would appear.

What a bunch of amateurs !”

“So Deano wants to be afforded time and patience which is predecessor wasn't given with the new squad.
I believe fans need to be made aware of the management structure at the club under Sinnott if Deano wants our full support.
Will he or the Board answer the following

What "outside influences got in the way" is Deano referring to when discussing his relationship with Sinnott?
What did Deano do to ease the situation when the "outside influences" got in the way?
How did the "outside influences" affect their day to day dealings?
What action did the Board take to ease the situation when they discovered that "outside influences" were affecting the management of the team

But please forgive me I honestly understood the problem to be that "inside influences" were unsettling the club.
Lastly would the Board tell us what involvement Deano had in signing of new players. He was the coach and one would have thought he would have been asked his opinion.

I said on Praise and Grumble and also commented yesterday that I knew that it was a foregone conclusion that Deano would be the manager
and i'm going to find it extremely hard to offer any support because of the manner of Sinnotts departure. Deano will have to get used to the added pressure of management knowing he isn't the supporters preferred choice. He will not be allowed time to "bed in" and why should he because he's been with the club long enough. Every mistake will the analysed and moaned about.
Lets hope it will be the making of him as a manager.”

“I will give anybody the benefit of the doubt; but his track record of the games he has had in charge is not inspiring for the fans. How is he going to change it radically?”

“Sink or swim deano and I hope its the latter. We should start from now. Its up to the players to perform and they can all hang their heads in shame so far with the exception of a couple. The fans have turned out now make them proud again and the number may even increase.”
