MATCH RATING

Entertainment 8

TOMLINSON: A crucial first-half block set the tone for an impressive display which included a fine save after the break 8

YATES: Looked largely untroubled in a composed performance until he was forced off early with a knock 7

McCOMBE: Rock at the back who kept Oxford at bay. Also claimed an assist on one goal and then went close to scoring one of his own 8

DAVIS: Did well under early pressure, and coped admirably after being pushed into an unfamiliar left-back role on Yates's departure 7

LOFT: Linked up well with Rigg in the first half, and looked a threat in a more advanced role after the switch 8

DODDS: Busy if unspectacular performance from the wide man, who turned right-back when Yates went off 7

GRIFFITH: Strong display full of grit and determination from the midfield enforcer who took the game by the scruff of the neck 8

SHUKER: Always a lively presence in the heart of a busy midfield 7

RIGG: Posed all sorts of problems for Oxford as he probed forward at every opportunity and then scored a stunning goal 9

POPE: Burst into life in the second half and went close on a couple of occasions 7

RICHARDS: A danger throughout, the skipper put Vale ahead and claimed an assist late on 8

McDONALD (for Yates, 54): Strong aerial presence made sure Oxford were never given a sniff 7
