The inclusion of Rob Taylor, Sam Morsy, Louis Dodds, Chris Birchall, Adam Yates, Ben Williamson, Chris Shuker and Joe Davis made for a strong Vale line-up and it was them who carried the early threat.
However, Williamson was denied by Dean Lyness and Shuker hit an effort just wide as the visitors searched for a breakthrough.
Burton slowly came into the game and former Stoke City trainee Jimmy Phillips, who was causing problems on the left, forced a save from Sam Johnson.
The visitors needed to reshuffle when Davis limped off with a knee injury eight minutes before the break, with Will Whieldon taking his place in central defence.
Dodds, four times, went close to getting on the scoresheet as the Valiants upped their game after the berak, but man-of-the-match Lyness could not be beaten.
