PORT Vale cemented their place at the top of League Two last night – and secured the future of striker Tom Pope.

Ashley Vincent's brace, which followed Lee Hughes' opener, earned a 3-0 home victory over AFC Wimbledon to leave the Valiants four points clear of Gillingham.

"I've made no secret of my desire to stay and I'm really pleased we have come to an agreement on a new deal," said Pope.

"I know people have been talking about my goal tally this season, but that's down to the style we play and how all of the players work for each other.

"The gaffer has put a lot of faith in me and I'm really pleased I have been able to repay that."

Boss Micky Adams added: "Everyone can recognise the contribution of Tom this season, both as a goalscorer and through his hard work.

"That contribution has been rightly rewarded and I welcome the opportunity to work with him for the remainder of this season and beyond."

Adams was also delighted with last night's victory, which left the Valiants 12 points clear of fourth-placed Burton Albion in their bid to seal automatic promotion.

"Going that far clear of the play-off places has certainly given us something to hang on to," he explained.

"It's for other teams to catch us now, and that might not be as easy as it seems.

"We're playing with such confidence at the moment and it doesn't seem to matter who we play, we'll give anyone a game.

"We're confident, but not cocky, and there's a steely determination in the squad to see the job through.

"I'm not bothered whether we're first, second or third as long as we're promoted."

And Adams was quick to hail the firepower within his squad these days.

Vincent's goals were his first since November, while Hughes now has four in four matches since joining the club.

"It's nice to see the goals being shared around," he said.

"Our firepower is terrific, but we can't take our forward play for granted."

“Sorry about that. It said the post below had not been submitted, so tried again, twice, then gave up. And then it appears 3 times.”

“Nice one Glennard. That made me laugh nearly as much as a Sjoke (nil) fan trying to teach Vale about football. How's your neck kjhgfd, watching all that total hoofball? Ha ha. Fact: our reserve goalkeeper has scored the same number of goals as Owen. Now, go back to your usual argument of, we have more fans than you, because that's why we all pay our money at the turnstiles isn't it, to watch the crowd?”

“The thing is, "kjhgfu", punctuation usually helps to convey meaning. I suppose in the case of your inane, immature ramblings it does not make a lot of difference.

To be honest, I assumed you didn't bother with it; either because you had trouble finding and hitting the smaller keys with your one fat typing finger, or you weren't concentrating fully because of what you were doing with your other hand.”
