GARY Roberts says he is close to rediscovering his best form after getting his career back on track, writes Steve Shaw.

The 23-year-old midfielder has featured in all seven games for Vale this season, but admits he has yet to hit top gear.

"I've played okay, but haven't punched at my full weight. That will come as I get fitter," said Roberts ahead of tomorrow's clash at Bradford (3pm).

"You can't play well in every game, all you can do is try your best.

"My passing hasn't been as good as it can be, but I'm not far away from producing my best form.

"I've just got to concentrate on keeping my place because there is a lot of competition."

Roberts's career has been blighted by off-field disciplinary problems, which led to his departure from Crewe, Yeovil, and Rotherham.

But Micky Adams offered a lifeline by handing him a short-term contract after a successful pre-season trial.

"There's a lot more to come from me because I'm only just starting out with the club," added Roberts.

"The manager has got my mind back on football, which dominates my life.

"I can't do anything else, so I've got to concentrate on doing something I'm half-decent at.

"This is the club that has really got a grip on me, because I know the manager won't stand for any messing around.

"Micky is the right manager for me and hopefully I can reward him with some good performances."

Roberts also admitted he would welcome the chance to extend his contract, which expires on January 26.

"I've just got to keep playing well and if the gaffer wants to extend my deal we'll sit down whenever he wants," said Roberts.

"I want to stay at Vale, but all I'm focusing on is tomorrow's game."
