MARK Grew insists Vale are leaving no stone unturned in their hunt for new talent.

Vale fielded five trialists – winger Kyle Bennett (Wolves), wideman Ashley Cain (Coventry), defenders Jacob Rowe (Birmingham) and Adrian Hawes (Hucknall), plus keeper David Bevan (Aston Villa) – in the reserves' 4-1 victory over Walsall on Wednesday.

STARTING EARLY: Port Vale's Mark Grew says the club is already planning for next year.

Grew says the club are already planning for next season as they continue their play-off push at Bury today (3pm). "People think we ease off at the end of the season, but we're not – in fact we are doing more work. We're going out and watching games, preparing for pre-season and looking at players.

"We're making shortlists based on what division we're going to be in next season.

"If we stay in this division we might look at some players, but if we get promoted we may look at others."

The five trialists gave a good account of themselves against Walsall with Bennett and Rowe both scoring.

Bennett, Rowe, Bevan and Cain are being released by their clubs in the summer, while Hawes's deal at Hucknall also expires at the end of the campaign, although he has been offered new terms by the UniBond Premier Division side.

They may be given another chance to impress Vale boss Micky Adams on Monday when the reserves host Macclesfield Town (7pm).

"It wasn't easy for those trialists last week, because they never trained with us," added Grew.

"But they showed a lot of enthusiasm, good touches and two of them scored.

"The manager has told them to get their agents to call him so he can discuss their situations."
