CHRIS Martin hopes his encouraging display in Vale's midweek win over Rochdale has edged him closer to reclaiming the number one jersey from Stuart Tomlinson, writes Steve Shaw.

The 20-year-old started his first game of the season as Vale booked their place in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round with a 2-1 win.

"I wanted to give the manager something to think about and I was happy with the way I played," said Martin.

"That's only going to spur me on to try my hardest and I can only see what happens.

"I've had some good games for the reserves and I wanted to make the manager think I can reproduce my best form."

Martin produced superb saves in either half on Tuesday to deny long-range efforts from Matt Done and Anthony Elding.

"The saves settled me down because I was pretty nervous," added Martin. "The lads gave me credit where it was due and that felt good."

Martin established himself as Vale's first-choice keeper last season, ahead of Joe Anyon, and made 47 appearances.

But Micky Adams gave Tomlinson the nod at the start of the campaign after signing the 26-year-old from Barrow.

"I was obviously disappointed not to start the season, but I didn't let if affect me," said Martin.

"It motivated me to win my place back – I didn't sulk about it.

"I've got a fantastic keeper competing with me, so I can only learn from him.

"There's no bad blood between us and we have a good relationship on the training ground."

Martin must now hope Adams keeps faith with him when his side resume their League Two campaign away to Bradford on Saturday (3pm).

"Chris made two great saves against Rochdale, so his concentration was spot on," said Adams.

"He'll be pleased with that, because it's not easy for him being second-choice.

"Chris has had to sit on the sidelines and watch Stuart produce some good performances.

"But Tuesday's selection wasn't a reflection on what Stuart has done.

"I just wanted to give Chris a game."
