Port Vale: Late show was one of the best I've seen

THE Great Escape is often usually used as an analogy in football these days, but there will never be a better game to apply it to than the one we saw at Huddersfield on Saturday. It was simply the most unbelievable last 10 minutes of a game that I have ever seen!

What made it all the more astonishing was that it was so out of the blue. It wasn't as if we were pounding away at the Huddersfield defence, and I think that every Vale fan who was there will admit that as the clock ticked towards 80 minutes we looked well beaten.

Some fans did actually leave, but I don't suppose they would like to admit it now! Huddersfield had sort of declared, but when Howland scored with that great chip to suddenly become a goal machine, Vale became the tiger who smelled blood, and Huddersfield couldn't get out of their pipe and slippers mode.

Louis Dodds often drifts in and out of games, but there is no doubt that he is a superb finisher when there is a sniff of a goal.

The quality of our goals was nothing short of brilliant, and that was some free-kick by Marc Richards. I think the only time that the Huddersfield keeper, former Vale loan player Matt Glennon, touched it was in the last minute when he went up front and crossed a good ball over from the right!

Macclesfield at home next then. Obvious thoughts of revenge will be in the air after the 4-1 which culminated in Lee Sinnott's departure, but I'm happy with that draw, I certainly didn't want a non-league team away!

The players shouldn't need much motivating either after the stick they took. Perhaps it would be wise not to ask Shane Tudor what he thinks of the draw, though. Just a pity it won't be played on the Saturday afternoon because Stoke are at home and already-arranged league games take precedence.

One thing that you can say about Dean Glover is that he has definitely got the midas touch. I didn't think that he had, but he's certainly proving the doubters (including me) wrong and long may it continue.

Mark Richards is proving to be his chief executioner with three last-minute winners, and by that I mean 96th, 94th and now 92nd minute goals!

One thing you can say about this Vale team is that at least they keep going to the end as the opposition is finding out of late.

Also, we managed to trouser £20,000 for Saturday's win which will help things along and maybe go towards bringing some players in especially as two could be departing.

Whether Damien McCrory's loan is extended or not, he will be away on international duty for the next two weekends, such are the perils of being a top club, and it looks as though Luke Rodgers wants away.

I can understand Luke's frustrations, the 4-5-1 is producing results and as long as that continues he won't be starting, so if we can get a decent fee from Yeovil or whoever then I don't think it is a bad deal, because he could go for nothing in the summer.

We do need to bring somebody in as a replacement though, and while you are winning games is the ideal time.

“Brilliant win totally unexpected after being 3-1 down. The hard facts that we were awlful little cohesion and the midfield with 5 men in it very poor.the first half pasted and it was dull Dodds took his chance well .Edwards had a nightmare of a game wasted the ball he had by just stopping and did not keep the flow of our moves going of what little moves that was.He was at fault for 2 goals against us solely because he did not tackle or track back,he has loads of ability to take men on but he did nothing. We had 4 chances and took them really well I would say they had at least 8 and only took 3. We look a desent team when we get tackles in the midfield area but it did not happen on Saturday.Great to be in the 2nd round but we have to improve on this poor showing if we want to get to the top of this division.Sorry it was no 7 goal thriller only at 3-2 did we show fight and commitment.”
