TWO goals in a minute from Sam Morsy and Ben Williamson helped Vale reserves beat their Oldham counterparts on the Bycars training pitches yesterday.

Vale started the brighter of the two sides, and Tom Morris headed a Chris Shuker corner wide in the third minute.

Soon after, Morsy sent Chris Birchall clear on the right-hand side of the Oldham penalty box, but the recent midfield recruit sent his shot just wide of the far post.

Ryan Lloyd also had a shot saved before Oldham created their first opening when Dan Taylor scuffed an effort wide.

However, the visitors took the lead against the run of play on 28 minutes.

A cross from the right saw Connor Hughes knock the ball down for Taylor to scramble it home from six yards out.

Joe Davis was then involved in the action at both ends, first hitting a 20-yard shot just wide of the Oldham goal, then making a block at the other end to prevent Danny Gossett extending the visitors' lead.

Morsy gave notice of what was to come when he fired a 20-yard shot over the Oldham bar five minutes before the break, and then almost levelled right on half-time when his effort was tipped over by keeper Alex Cisak.

Calvin Andrew headed wide from a Shuker corner before Morris went close to an equaliser after 63 minutes.

He strode forward from midfield before unleashing a 30-yard shot that Cisak tipped on to a post, with Adam Yates' follow-up effort being tipped over by the busy keeper.

Watched by chairman Paul Wildes, Vale turned the game with two goals in a minute.

The first came after Morsy was clipped by James Tarkowski to concede a free-kick 25 yards from the Oldham goal on 72 minutes.

Morsy took the subsequent set-piece himself, curling a fine shot into the net.

And barely 60 seconds later, Williamson received the ball in midfield and made his way forward before hitting a powerful 20-yard effort that fairly fizzed into the net.

Birchall went close to making it 3-1 with a close range shot that was blocked by the keeper, while Andrew could also have got in on the act, but headed over when well placed.

“Ben is playing his best football since coming to the Vale and finding the net. He does not deserve to sit on the bench.”
