PORT Vale have received around 500 votes within a day of asking supporters for permission to change the club's crest.

The club are delighted with the interest after giving fans the option of sticking with the current crest or replacing it with the badge which was introduced in 1956 and used for the majority of Roy Sproson's playing days.

The club are giving no clues as to which way the voting is going, but are reminding fans they have until 5pm on January 24 to vote for or against the proposed change.

To vote, fans are asked to email vote@pvfccrest.co.uk stating YES or NO in the subject line.

Port Vale historian Jeff Kent is broadly in favour of the change. He said: "I like the 1956 badge. The design is far superior to the one we have at the moment.

"Also the colours on this badge are much more true to the club's colours.

"A problem with the badge in use at the moment is it has 1876 as the club's foundation year. However, the vast majority of evidence shows the club was founded in 1879.

"However, I would make one or two changes to the proposed crest. I don't think the vases on the crest are very well drawn. Also, the slogan 'For all those who have gone before' seems very vague. I would prefer something like 'For the Valiants of Yesteryear.'

Long-serving Vale fan Anthony Hancock, from Tunstall, prefers the current badge.

He said: "I've been watching Vale since the 1950s and the days of Roy Sproson and Ray King.

"So it's certainly nothing against them when I say I prefer the badge we have at the moment.

"I just think the badge we have now is more distinctive and eye-catching. I would stick with it."

If Vale do change, they will hope the crest brings the team more luck than it did when it was first introduced in 1956.

Vale were relegated from the Second Division in 1956/57 and also went down the following year too.
