GEOFF Horsfield is refusing to give up on his season – or his playing career – despite suffering another injury setback.

The 36-year-old has been limited to just 12 appearances this season, and is currently laid low with a calf injury.

The striker revealed earlier this year he would consider hanging up his boots if the injuries continue. But Horsfield, who is also assistant manager, said: "I'm not writing off my season yet.

"I came back from a different injury and got through a few weeks of training, but the calf tightened up again.

"It's been a frustrating time, because the team haven't been winning back-to-back games. But I've not had any thoughts about my future. I'll look at it at the end of the season. But I'd rather just concentrate on the coaching side by getting the lads prepared and having an input, rather than worrying about myself."

Horsfield is one of 17 players entering the final few months of their existing deals – and boss Micky Adams hasn't revealed whether he intends to offer the former Premier League striker a new playing contract or assistant's deal.

Horsfield has also suffered groin problems, a cracked bone in his hand and a hairline rib fracture during his debut season in Burslem.

His latest injury rules him out of today's clash at Chesterfield (3pm). But Horsfield is determined to play a part in Vale's run-in and could return for next week's trip to Cheltenham.

"I've been struggling with my calf for the last 10 days," added Horsfield.

"I've got a slight tear, which is frustrating, because I want to contribute on the pitch as well as off it."
