Port Vale: Gills missed out in late bid to sign Hughes
GILLINGHAM boss Martin Allen made a last-ditch bid to snatch Lee Hughes from Port Vale.
Allen revealed he tried to tempt the striker to the Priestfield Stadium only hours before he signed at Vale Park.
Hughes, who could now make his debut at Gillingham this weekend, agreed a deal with the Valiants on Monday after being released by Notts County.
He completed the moved after passing a medical yesterday, but Allen, who worked with Hughes at Meadow Lane, was keen to put a spanner in the works.

"We were at it all morning trying to see if we could sort something out, but Lee had his agreement already put in place with Port Vale," said Allen.
"We did try to get him, but Port Vale is closer to his home and it wasn't to be.
"The chairman was set to finance it.
"I don't go banging on his door about everybody, there is lots of speculation about all sorts of players at the moment, but I certainly won't be losing any sleep over it and I don't watch the television or pray to God we are going to get another player in."
